Job Description

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will assist the Project Manager and the Resident Engineer in administering the operational functions of the day-to-day activities on the project. The Mechanical Engineer will participate and manage in review and approval of all submittals by the contractor with a focus on quality assurance during the engineering phase of construction.


Under the supervision of the project resident engineer or MEP lead, performs routine inspection monitoring tasks to confirm if proper construction supervision is being performed by others.  Inspects various facets of work on the construction site and performs continuous surveillance of assigned construction activities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Document non-conformance and may participate in determining appropriate resolution.


Roles and responsibilities:


  • Assist the Resident Engineer or MEP Lead in performing the contractual duties on site.
  • Provides resolution for technical engineering problems within the assigned discipline(s); coordinates application of solutions to ensure progress on site.
  • Advise the project manager of any technical aspects of the mechanical services that may affect construction progress, quality and the like.
  • Continually review the contractor's construction schedule during the progress of site works.
  • Review construction submittals from project inception to close-out.
    • Review Contractor's installation method statements.
    • Review Contractor's shop drawings against the design [tender] drawings for compliance with the design intent and return to project manager with appropriate comments / approval.
    • Review contractor's mechanical shop drawing in conjunction with the structural and electrical engineers to ensure engineering co-ordination and advise project manager accordingly.
    • Review Contractor's mechanical services material proposals against specified technical performance requirements and advise the Project Manager on the appropriateness of the proposals.
    • Review Contractor's proposed sub contractor(s) associated with the Mechanical engineering works from a technical standpoint.
  • Monitors material procurement and deliveries to ensure timeliness in support of construction activities and schedule within the assigned discipline.
  • Undertake general project site observation / inspection of the mechanical services works for Contractor's adherence to the approved shop drawings and Consultant's specification, good working practices, the construction schedule and health & safety.
  • Be available to undertake off-site inspections of proposed equipment and materials as may be deemed necessary by the Project Manager.
  • Undertake prior review of Contractor's proposed mechanical system testing & commissioning methods and schedule
  • Witness on-site piped system pressure test, air conditioning duct leakage testing and other testing that may be required during the first fix works and advise the Project Manager accordingly.
  • On a spot basis witness mechanical system final testing and commissioning.
  • Review and comment on Contractor's testing and commissioning results and advise Project Manager accordingly.
  • Prepare on-going list of mechanical services defects for contractor's remedial action.
  • Undertake final project snagging and prepare list of defects for Contractor's action.
  • Attend project, site progress and any mechanical services related technical meetings as directed by the project manager.
  • Prepare draft site / engineer's instructions, relating to the building mechanical services, as required and issue to the Project Manager.
  • Provide advice to the Project Manager in regard to any mechanical services related variation costs that may be claimed by the Contractor during the course of the works.
  • Review and comment upon Contractors Operation and Maintenance manuals.
  • Oversee junior engineers and inspectors for all mechanical work and ensure that installation activities comply with contractual obligations and quality control standards.
  • Follow-up with the contractor and support in coordinating with the utility authority regarding connections whenever required.
  • Ensures that the project quality control procedures are used for the construction supervision works and monitors it for improvement.
  • Collaborates with construction management to eliminate any hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect the environment or the safety or health of employees.
  • Reviews and interprets discipline design drawings and specifications to ensure current re vision level and correct technical execution of the work. 
  • Performs works inspection requests and material inspection requests as required to support juniors.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

Technical skills and experience required:


  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Min of 10 years postgraduate experience and a min. of 7 years of similar work experience on large projects.
  • Regional experience is preferred.
  • Authority registration is preferred.
  • A professional who can manage and coordinate specialized activity, discipline or team of moderate size and complexity.
  • UAE Driving Licence
  • Pro-active in resolving issues.
  • Good communications skill & relationship building.
