Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel with expertise in the shipping and maritime industry, specializing in maritime law, shipping regulations, and industry contracts. The role involves providing legal counsel on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and dispute resolution while ensuring adherence to international and local maritime laws. The ideal candidate must have at least five years of experience in corporate and commercial law, strong contract negotiation skills, and familiarity with shipping agreements such as BIMCO and charter parties. Fluency in English and experience with sanctions compliance frameworks are essential, with an LLM being a plus.
Key
Responsibilities:
- Provide
legal counsel on a broad range of issues, including corporate governance,
commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, maritime law, sanctions
compliance, and risk management.
- Draft,
review, and negotiate complex agreements.
- Manage
legal aspects of high-value corporate transactions, including due diligence,
drafting, and negotiations.
- Ensure
compliance with local and international shipping regulations.
- Lead and
manage dispute resolution: arbitration, litigation, and mediation related to
shipping operations or commercial activities.
- Collaborate with other departments to provide legal support on different
matters.
- Liaise
with external counsel, regulatory authorities, and classification societies.
- Oversee
and manage legal risks, develop strategies to mitigate liabilities, ensure
regulatory compliance, and monitor the company’s adherence to sanctions
regulations.
- Stay
informed of changes in laws, maritime regulations, and sanctions regimes to
ensure the company remains compliant and updated on relevant legal
developments.
Requirements-
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law, with legal qualifications from a
recognized jurisdiction. LLM will be an advantage.
- 5+ years
of experience in corporate and commercial law with mandatory exposure to the
shipping or maritime sector.
- Strong
knowledge of contract law, regulatory compliance, sanctions compliance, and
risk management.
- Experience managing cross-border transactions and complex corporate matters.
- Experience in monitoring and implementing sanctions compliance across various
jurisdictions.
- Excellent
negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
- Fluent
English.
