Senior Consular Advisor

What you’ll be doing: Te whakamahere Reporting to the Consul General/Trade Commissioner, you will plan and manage consular services for distressed New Zealanders and oversee the Consulate’s daily public services. As the Senior Consular Advisor, you represent New Zealand to its citizens in your jurisdiction, ensuring their rights are protected. You will handle complex situations with empathy and resilience, providing grounded insight through your impeccable judgment, especially during crises.
Your responsibilities include responding to emergencies, leading the preparation of contingency plans for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and maintaining effective relationships with consular staff, seconded staff, relevant divisions in Wellington, and consular partners in the UAE and Qatar. You will also support visiting VIPs, respond to general enquiries, provide notarial services, and manage Safetravel registrations. You will support team members, ensuring they provide consistent and accurate advice, and manage the after-hours consular duty phone roster.
You will also manage the annual ANZAC Day commemoration ceremony, polling activities for the New Zealand General Election, and other official visits. In this role, you are the face of New Zealand to its citizens in the region. You will be based between our Dubai and Abu Dhabi offices 2 to 3 days per week in each. There is also a commitment to regular travel as well as quarterly visits to Qatar to meet with counterparts from other consulates.
What you’ll need to be successful: Ō Pūkenga You will be adaptable and flexible, extremely customer focused, and have a strong sense of initiative. You’ll possess excellent English language skills, both oral and written in order to manage sensitive situations with clarity, care and professionalism. You will need to be a person who has a huge amount of natural empathy and a willingness to help others, as part of this role is helping Kiwis in distress. Attention to detail is a critical requirement.
You are likely to be highly resilient, energized by variety and juggling multiple responsibilities, but you will also be able to focus on the detail and make sure nothing gets missed. You will be a born problem solver, who likes to just make things happen! Your default will be to take a pragmatic approach to supporting consular cases, escalating when needed to ensure the delivery of consistent, accurate, and appropriate support and advice to New Zealand citizens.
You should have strong organisational and communication skills, proficiency in managing consular IT systems, and a resilient, customer-focused mindset. Being technology-savvy with strong MS Office skills, and having experience in notarial services and managing Safetravel registrations, will be advantageous. Experience in Human Resources, Legal/Professional services, with previous administration or coordination experience, is also beneficial.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of the New Zealand Culture is advantageous.
