Job Description
The Planning Engineer plays a key role in the strategic planning, design, and execution of cable-related infrastructure for the transmission network and substations. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in managing and coordinating large-scale cable projects, including the planning of both overhead and underground cables, as well as substation cable systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Transmission and Substation Cable Planning:
- Lead the planning and design of transmission and substation cable systems, including both medium and high-voltage cables, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the development of routing plans, installation methods, and cable specifications.
- Conduct in-depth load flow studies and fault analysis for the design and optimization of transmission cable systems and substation connections.
Project Management and Execution:
- Plan, schedule, and manage the execution of cable installation projects, ensuring all work is completed in compliance with quality, safety, and environmental standards.
- Monitor and update project schedules, ensuring alignment with overall transmission network goals and timelines.
Design & Technical Leadership:
- Lead the design review process for cable installations on transmission lines and substations, ensuring designs are technically sound and feasible.
- Provide advanced technical guidance on cable system layout, routing, connections, and protection schemes.
Advanced Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyse cable system performance, load flow data, and fault occurrences to identify potential improvements in network reliability and efficiency.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations for senior management, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies, highlighting key findings, project progress, and recommendations.
Cost Control and Resource Management:
- Lead the development of cost estimates, material requirements, and labour resources for cable projects.
- Monitor project expenditures and ensure resources are allocated efficiently, recommending cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality.
Requirements- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Advanced training or certifications in power systems planning, cable system design, or project management (e.g., PMP) is a plus.
- Minimum of 4-5 years of hands-on experience in planning, designing, and managing transmission and substation cable systems, with a strong emphasis on high-voltage and medium-voltage cables.
- Proven track record in managing large-scale cable installation and upgrade projects within transmission and substation environments.
- Extensive experience in cable system design, cable protection, fault analysis, and integration with other power network components.
- In-depth knowledge of power transmission, substation infrastructure, and cable design standards.
- Advanced expertise in cable sizing, fault current analysis, load flow studies, and electrical network modelling.
- Familiarity with simulation and design software tools such as PSS/E, ETAP, CYME, AutoCAD, or similar.
