Duties and Responsibilities:
Must be able to perform each essential function effectively to be successful in this position:
1. Applies casts using a variety of materials, including plaster and synthetic casting materials and high and low temperature plastics, with minimal or no supervision
Applies appropriate cast/splint per physician order using appropriate casting/splint material with body in appropriate position.
Shapes cast to ensure maximum comfort and minimum unnecessary pressures.
Trims and remodels cast to ensure comfort and fit with cast knife, cast cutter, and cast spreader to remove parts of cast and to enlarge cast to decrease pressure in swollen area.
Performs appropriate documentation and patient education related to cast or splinting and as directed by Physician or Registered Nurse.
Performs casting for diabetic ulcers.
2. Assists in Outpatient Clinic, Operating Theatre, Inpatient Units and Emergency room
Assists physician with application of cast when necessary.
Applies prescribed cast to patient according to physician order.
Provides cast modification as needed.
Instructs patient regarding cast care.
3. Maintains supplies, tools and equipment
Cleans procedure tables, work areas and tools according to schedules. Cleans general equipment according to guidelines
Stocks the procedure rooms according to schedules and as needed.
Reports non-functioning or defective equipment to supervisor and submits repair request.
Maintain inventory of all relevant cast materials.
4. Performs team member responsibilities
Communicates effectively with patients/families and the hospital team in a manner that promotes positive working relationships.
Within defined standards and with minimal supervision, problem solves and makes decisions about patient care issues as an active team member.
Provide organisational and clerical support to facilitate optimal patient care and hospital operation.
Recognises own needs for personal development and continuing professional growth.
Sets objectives for individual performance evaluation annually.
