Position Overview:The Principal Project Planner will be responsible for overseeing the planning, scheduling, and coordination of a major downstream oil and gas project. This senior role requires extensive experience in project planning, from the initiation phase through to execution, ensuring that all project activities are completed on time, within scope, and within budget. The Principal Project Planner will work closely with project stakeholders, including engineers, procurement, and operations teams, to ensure alignment with the project’s strategic objectives and timelines.
Key Responsibilities:Project Planning & Scheduling:
- Develop and manage the detailed project schedule, ensuring it aligns with project goals, milestones, and timelines.
- Create and maintain comprehensive project plans that include all phases of the downstream project, including design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up.
- Coordinate with various project departments to ensure that activities are accurately reflected in the project schedule and any changes are incorporated in a timely manner.
- Lead the preparation and analysis of critical path schedules and highlight potential project delays, risks, or conflicts.
Resource & Workforce Planning:
- Work with project leadership to define resource requirements and ensure efficient allocation of resources (personnel, equipment, and materials) in the project schedule.
- Develop manpower plans and coordinate with human resources to ensure adequate staffing levels throughout the project lifecycle.
Risk Management:
- Identify project risks related to schedule and resources, and develop mitigation plans to address these risks.
- Monitor and report on schedule deviations, delays, and potential impacts, and propose corrective actions as needed to maintain the project schedule.
- Conduct “what-if” scenario planning to proactively address schedule slippages and mitigate potential risks.
Progress Monitoring & Reporting:
- Track and report on project progress against the planned schedule, providing timely updates to senior management and project stakeholders.
- Prepare and present detailed weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc progress reports, including earned value analysis, schedule performance index (SPI), and other performance indicators.
- Ensure the timely reporting of schedule status to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring transparency and clear communication.
Collaboration & Coordination:
- Collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure that project activities are sequenced appropriately and that dependencies are understood.
- Work closely with contractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure that their activities are aligned with the overall project schedule.
- Participate in project meetings, including planning, risk assessment, and project reviews, to provide input on schedule-related concerns and updates.
Change Management:
- Review changes to the project scope, schedule, or resources and assess the impact on the overall project timeline.
- Ensure that all schedule changes are accurately captured, assessed, and reflected in the project schedule.
- Assist in the development of time-related change orders or claims as required.
Quality & Safety:
- Ensure that the project schedule incorporates safety and quality considerations, in line with the project’s health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards.
- Promote and maintain a culture of safety awareness and compliance within the project planning activities.
Leadership & Mentoring:
- Lead and mentor junior planners, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of planning processes and tools, implementing best practices for project scheduling and planning.
Qualifications:- Has experience in the oil/gas, hydrocarbon, refinery, offshore, or infrastructure industries and has project planning and scheduling.
