Job Description

1. JOB DETAILS:


Position Title: Principal Engineer, Tailing


Department: Technical Services and Continuous Improvement


  • Design and Construction: Oversee the design and construction of TSFs to ensure they meet safety and environmental standards, in conjunction with the Engineer of Record (EoR) for each TSF.
  • Operation and Maintenance: Oversee the operation and maintenance of TSFs, ensuring they function efficiently and safely, in conjunction with the EoR for each TSF.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all tailings management activities comply with GISTM and other relevant regulations. Prepare and submit regular reports to regulatory bodies and company management, in conjunction with the EoR for each TSF.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with tailings management. Implement best practices to minimize environmental impact and enhance safety, in conjunction with the EoR for each TSF.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, community groups, and environmental organisations.
  • Training and Development: Provide training and development opportunities for junior engineers and other staff involved in tailings management, in conjunction with the EoR for each TSF.
  • Liaison with Engineer of Record: Work closely with the external Engineer of Record (EoR) to ensure all TSFs are designed, constructed, and operated as intended.

2. OVERALL, JOB PURPOSE:


The Principal Tailings Engineer will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tailings management across multiple tailings storage facilities (TSFs), ensuring compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).


3. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES:


  • Education: bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Tailings Management, or a related field. A master’s degree or higher is preferred.
  • Experience: At least 15 years of experience in tailings management, with a focus on design, construction, and operation of TSFs. Experience with GISTM is highly desirable.

4. Qualification:


1. High school certificate


2. Maths and Science preferred


3. Trade test + 1 Year as Planner (subject to personal performance)


 5.Ma’aden High Performance Competencies:


Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is preferred.


6.Skills:


  • Strong technical knowledge of tailings management and TSF design.
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyse complex data and make informed decisions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity in relevant software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, tailings management software).

7. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:


•    Lead the tailings management team, providing technical expertise and guidance.
•    Oversee the development and implementation of tailings management strategies in line with GISTM.
•    Project management and technical review of tailings related projects (design, construction, remediation, operation, and closure) specifically including the implementation of Global Industry Standards for Tailings Management (GISTM)
•    Conduct regular visits to the TSFs to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
•    Liaise with design and construction teams to ensure TSFs are built to the highest standards.
•    Monitor the performance of TSFs and implement corrective actions as needed.
•    Prepare and present reports on tailings management activities to senior management and regulatory bodies.
•    Stay updated on the latest developments in tailings management and incorporate best practices into the company’s operations.
•    Coordinate with the Engineer of Record to ensure all TSFs meet regulatory and safety standard.
•    Procurement and management of Contractors and Consultants
•    Budgeting and auditing of tailings financials. 
•    Report writing, authoring technical papers, and mentoring of staff.
