Basic Function Provides evaluation and treatment of patients with physical, cognitive or psychological limitations arising from diseases, injury or conditions occurring throughout the life span to help them achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life through the use of purposeful activity.
Interventions are designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which restore the highest possible level of independence. Practices according to professional codes, JHAH and JCI policies and procedures.
Scope Practices within John Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Nursing & Clinical Services Department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Udhailiyah, Ras Tanura and Abqaiq according to professional codes and defines organizational policies and procedures and advances work practices.
Following a referral from the physician/Surgeon/Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing occupational assessment, establishing functional goals, and planning intervention in collaboration with the patient and family to rehabilitate patients with various mental/physical conditions such as amputations, burns, musculoskeletal, or neurological problems. These interventions may include exercise prescription, assessment / fabrication and provision of splints, evaluation/measurement and ordering adaptive equipment
including but not limited to wheelchairs, seating, home adaptation and assisted technology, order special medical items, burns, vascular garments and mastectomy items as required for patients, using a variety of tools for mental or physical evaluation and rehabilitation according to the need of patients.
Position reports to the Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead, who provides work direction and guidance.
Incumbent is responsible for recording, and evaluating the patients’ responses and progress throughout therapy. Position gives work direction to Physical/Occupational Therapy Assistant. Reports to and receives guidance from the senior Occupational Therapy staff and RSU Supervisor.

Principal Contacts INTERNAL: Daily with Physicians / Surgeons, nurses and other medical staff members to coordinate the occupational therapy and rehabilitation program. Daily with all levels of Company employees and their dependents as patients.
EXTERNAL: Occasionally with other company employees during outreach activities and hospital surveys or with outside medical professionals visiting JHAH
Principal Duties With guidance from Clinical Leader and Senior Rehabilitation staff
ASSESSMENT
- Performs patient assessment, establishes functional goals, and designs a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient and family.
- Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, or caregiver and provides education and educational material to meet those needs, documenting intervention in the PTR
PLANNING
- Plans for rehabilitation needs at discharge with family and multi inter/disciplinary team
- Plans and organizes own patient workload training sessions and straightforward activities with guidance and support of mentor or senior staff
IMPLEMENTATION/INTERVENTION
- Provides intervention in accordance with evidence-based practice the physician’s orders and established plan of care.
- Prescribes exercise and administers therapeutic techniques including but not limited to therapy various forms heat therapy, and cryotherapy.
- Measures for burns items, breast prosthesis, wheel chairs, hoists and home aids
- Fabricates custom splints appropriate to patients condition.
- For each patient treated documents in the medical record using SOAP format. Documentation includes an initial assessment, progress notes, and a discharge summary family teaching and home exercise program.
- Demonstrates/instructs patients and families in procedures to be continued at home.
- Communicates with patient, family, caregivers, and members of the multi/interdisciplinary team to promote maximum benefit of care and rehabilitation.
- Discusses progress with the medical team, recommends changes; advises when the patient is ready for discharge from the therapy program.
EVALUATION
- Assesses the effectiveness of treatment and modifies treatment to achieve goals.
- Search’s and appraises evidence to address a specific question/issue arising in practice with guidance

- Presents a positive image of JHAH through professional appearance and behavior
- Treats all customers with courtesy, respect and caring behaviors
- Responds to customer concerns in a timely manner i.e. answers bell, assist patient who are lost in the hospital, respond to nurses calls
- Maintains confidentiality by choosing the appropriate person, time and place for patient related discussions
- Assures patient comfort and dignity at all times
- Provides customer centered evidence based occupational therapy service to adult / pediatric patients with a variety of illnesses, impairments and disabilities.
- Proactive in requesting support and guidance to assist patient care, guided learning and general concerns
- Performs evidence based literature searches with guidance
- Performs other duties with guidance and support to assist the overall effectiveness of the department. These duties may include but not limited to:
- Participates in the planning, implementing and evaluating patient care conferences, outreach activities including health exhibitions, MDFD presentations, lectures to other JHAH staff and in-services
- Participates in the orientation program of any Rehabilitation new hire
- Mentors less experienced members of the physical therapy group in routine tasks.
- Contributes to discussions on development of new patient educational materials such as patient instructions and exercise handouts.
- Contributes to discussions on material requirements of the clinic and assist decisions of equipment needs.
- Contributes to discussions on the development of Rehab unit evidence based clinical protocols and patient assessment forms.
- Provides patient reports at the request of the Unit Supervisor.
- Participates as needed with on-going training of the unit assistants.
- Assists senior staff during absence as requested.
- Supports RSU in-service / Hazmat/ Safety activities as requested
- Supports unit culture of safety and quality through participation in clinical audits, peer review, compliance with yearly safety requirements, development activities and more as required
- Keeps abreast of new techniques or equipment and recommends and assists with implementation as applicable. Meets professional competency requires for assigned role while continuing to grow and develop professional through self-directed learning, and the job exposure and experience and through mentorship and courses
- Frequently checks for and reads all communication/minutes
- Participates in lifelong learning in accordance with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution recognized by JHAH, plus the required clinical internship for professional registration.
- A current license to practice in country of origin.
Experience
- Two years minimum clinical Occupational Therapy experience following licensure/registration in the country of origin.
- Rotational experience in an acute care setting is desirable, however, not essential to determine that the occupational therapist possesses the skills, knowledge and experience required to render appropriate services according to sound principles of practice.
Certifications/Other requirements as applicable
- Current BLS Certification.
- Fluent spoken and written English.
- Spoken Arabic desirable.
- Computer proficiency required, Microsoft office applications preferred
