Job Purpose

A Concrete Laboratory Engineer is responsible for overseeing the testing and quality control of concrete materials in a laboratory setting. This position involves performing physical and chemical tests on concrete and its components, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards and specifications, analyzing test results, and providing technical support for concrete mix design and product development. The engineer will work closely with construction teams, suppliers, and clients to ensure the performance and quality of concrete materials in various construction projects.




Key Accountability Areas

1. Concrete Testing and Analysis: 


Perform laboratory testing of concrete, cement, aggregates, and admixtures to assess properties like strength, workability, and durability.
Conduct slump tests, compressive strength tests, permeability, and other relevant tests as per ASTM, ACI, or other standards.
Evaluate concrete mixes and adjust proportions to meet project specifications.
2. Quality Control and Assurance:


 Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure the consistency of concrete materials.
 Review and analyze test data to ensure compliance with project specifications and regulatory standards.
 Provide feedback and recommendations to construction teams to improve the quality and performance of concrete.
3. Mix Design: 


Develop, modify, and optimize concrete mix designs based on project requirements and environmental conditions.
 Collaborate with suppliers to source materials and adjust mix designs to optimize cost and performance.
4. Documentation and Reporting: 


 Prepare and maintain detailed records of test results, laboratory data, and analysis reports.
 Ensure proper documentation and traceability of test samples, materials, and results.
 Communicate findings and recommendations to project managers, clients, and stakeholders.
5. Equipment Maintenance and Calibration: 


 Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
 Ensure that laboratory instruments are properly cleaned, calibrated, and maintained according to manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
6. Green Concrete and Innovation:


Stay informed about advancements in green concrete technologies, including sustainable materials, energy-efficient practices, and environmental impact reduction.
Contribute to the development and implementation of innovative concrete solutions that enhance sustainability, such as recycled aggregates, alternative binders (Fly ash, GGBFS, Silica fume, ...etc.), and low-carbon footprint products.
Collaborate on research and development projects focused on new product innovations and eco-friendly concrete solutions, promoting best practices in sustainability and performance.
7. Knowledge of Lightweight Concrete Types:


Foamed-Cellular Concrete: Develop and analyze mixes with air bubbles for reduced density and improved insulation.
Lightweight Aggregates Concrete: Design and test mixes using lightweight aggregates like expanded clay or pumice to lower density.
No-Fines Concrete.
8. Health and Safety: 


 Follow all safety protocols in the laboratory to ensure a safe working environment.
 Implement and maintain safety procedures related to the handling of materials, chemicals, and testing equipment.




Role Accountability
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a concrete laboratory or similar environment.
  • Familiarity with testing standards such as ASTM, ACI, and EN standards.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in laboratory equipment and software for data analysis and reporting.
