Job Description

Job Purpose 



Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities



  • Performs reception duties, checking and washing of all used surgical instruments returned to the department for processing in line with departmental policy.
  • Assembles all types of surgical instruments, dressing packs, supplementary instruments and non-container instruments surgical trays used throughout the hospital using the packaging materials within the department in a safe and effective manner in line with departmental policy.
  • Assists in correct and safe sterilizing of all surgical instruments and dressing packs for the hospital according to departmental policy.
  • Improve and maintain the quality of produced work in the CSSD to the highest standard of quality.
  • Informs immediate supervisor of any defects connected with either surgical instruments or goods processed by the department in the process of production and delivery.
  • Undertakes any other duties at the request of the supervisor.
  • Contributes to an on-call commitment to cover the technical requirement for patients under the care of the clinician.
  • Monitors and maintain Infection Control Policy and Quality Assurance.
  • Actively participates in departmental responsibilities, BLS, fire/disaster drills, and in-service training.
  • Carry out autoclave leak rate tests in conjunction with the Sterilizer Maintenance Engineer and record the results.
  • Carry out the Bowie Dick pre-use autoclave tests, complete all paperwork and present it to the Quality Control Officer for authorization of machine use.
  • Carry out microbiological challenge tests on all sterilizer processes and note batch load sheet.
  • Loads and unloads the autoclave trolley in a manner, which will be conductive to the sterilization process to be used and ensure thorough drying of load contents.
  • Checks all products prior to loading to ensure they carry the batch code label of the correct color corresponding to the year period.
  • Checks each individual finished load to establish that all heat indicators have changed color and that the products are dry, and annotate the batch record sheet to authorize the removal and supply of the sterile goods.
  • Prepares and checks all items for Plasma sterilization and not accept any product, which does not match up with the “permissible load listing”.
  • Liaises with the FMS or Bio-Med Engineering and control PPM for the 3 sterilizers, 1 Low Temperature.
  • Consults with the Quality Control Officer regarding any unlisted products sent for Plasma sterilization to ascertain their acceptance for entrance in the register of “permissible load listing”.
  • Carry out all pre-process requirements for Plasma sterilization; prepare and load the microbiological challenges and formulate standard load processes.
  • Checks and record the local air analysis using equipment provided before entering the sterilizer room. 
  • Prepares and checks all items for Plasma Hydrogen Peroxide sterilization. 
  • Be expected to identify from the loading register what items may or may not be processed for gas sterilization.
  • Maintains all log books for three (3) Porous Load Sterilizer, one (1) Plasma Hydrogen Peroxide.
  • Checks all materials accessories use for sterilization and wrapping materials / tapes.
  • Participates in weekly cleaning and checking for outdated supplies.
  • Respects patients and their families to promote a patient-centered care culture.
  • Participates and supports quality improvement and patient safety activities as an individual or with multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum or Required
•    CSSD Technology Diploma from a recognized institution.
•    SCFHS.
Experience: 2 years
Preferred: 6 months of accredited CSSD course, and credentialed by CSSD International Board Certification (CBSPD and/or IAHCSMM).
