The Office of Academic Services is looking for a collaborative and inclusive colleague to join the academic support team as a Writing Specialist in support of Georgetown University in Qatar’s (GU-Q’s) diverse and ambitious undergraduate learners.


The Office of Academic Services (OAS) is a dynamic academic support unit providing a variety of programs and services to enhance learning for all students at GU-Q. OAS is currently seeking a part-time Writing Specialist who will support the development of students’ academic writing skills. The position will work primarily with students on their course assignments in the humanities and social sciences via one-on-one tutoring.


This is a term, part-time position scheduled to work 20 hours per week throughout the academic year. The incumbent will be expected to start as soon as possible and the appointment will be subject to renewal for the next academic year.


As this position is based in Doha, Qatar and offers no relocation assistance, GU-Q is looking for locally based candidates only. This is a non-sponsored position that requires all applicants to already have the necessary sponsorship to live and work in Qatar.


Key Accountabilities


  • Foster the development of students’ academic writing skills by providing expert tutoring.
  • Mentor and train student tutors on the fundamentals of tutoring and develop their understanding of writing center practices.
  • Identify and/or develop resources and other forms of supplemental support for students’ academic writing.
  • Assist with administrative and operational tasks and projects to maintain and continuously improve the high quality of writing center services.

Key Activities


  • Provide individual tutoring to students working on documents at various stages of the writing process.
  • Work with the coordinator to deliver training to student tutors on the fundamentals of writing center tutoring and provide ongoing feedback that supports their professional development.
  • Locate and/or create support materials such as citation guides, handouts, videos, and/or presentations for use in tutoring sessions, workshops, and online.
  • Facilitate presentations or workshops on behalf of the center.
  • Assist the coordinator with regular operations such as scheduling and advertising as well as special projects.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of OAS to support student success.
  • Other similar duties, as assigned.

Requirements


  • Master’s degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, Communication Studies, Education, TESOL, or related field with an emphasis in writing is preferred.
  • TESL/TESOL/CELTA or equivalent is an asset.
  • 2+ years of experience in teaching writing or working in a writing center at a postsecondary institution.
  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse writers.
  • Experience providing academic assistance in study skills and effective learning strategies.
  • Knowledge of writing pedagogy.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and citing skills.
  • Familiarity with the conventions of academic writing.
  • Awareness of common standards for academic integrity.
  • Competency with Google Suite, MS Office, LMS platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively.
