Job Description

Job Summary:


The Director - Nursing (Critical Care) has 24 hour accountability for clinical, operational and budget responsibility for all operational nursing services within the allocated functions.


The Director works as a key member of the hospital’s senior nursing management team and assumes accountability for the overall management and the delivery of quality of nursing care to achieve optimal quality standards, patient experience and outcomes for the service. The Director is accountable to the Chief Nursing Officer for ensuring that the standards for nursing care and related services are adhered to in the assigned area of responsibility.


The Director of Nursing is a visible clinical role that deploys skills in the relevant clinical settings for 30% of their time.


KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES


Leadership:


  • Provides highly visible leadership and fosters a culture which values continuing professional development that empowers professionals to achieve excellence in the delivery of patient care
  • Fosters interprofessional education and care delivery within their areas of responsibility.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with others, building a culture of collaboration both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization. 
  • Acts as a role model at all times, being an exemplar in standards of nursing practice and organizational policy.
  • At all times upholds the organizational values.

Strategy:


  • Contributes to the clinical services strategic plan for which they are responsible.
  • Provides expert nursing advice and leadership to implement services and developments within the clinical group.

Operations:


  • Directs the plans for resource allocation, selection, development, retention and succession planning of all  nursing staff 
  • Sets the daily deployment of nursing staff on a day to day basis through the Clinical Nurse Managers.
  • Supports the effective utilization of all resources within the clinical services including bed utilization. 
  • Ensures the coordination and actioning of all operational KPI’s within their areas of responsibility 

Quality & Safety: 


  • Ensures the best quality of services - safety, effectiveness and patient experience within the services they are responsible for.
  • Continually reviews nursing practice to ensure that the most effective, research based and timely care is provided to patients and their families. 
  • Identifies actions and delivers improvements related to the organizational quality priorities through the UBL.
  • Ensures follow up of all related internal and external governance and quality related reports, coordinating the development and implementation of action plans, and their delivery within agreed timescales
  • Seeks opportunities to evaluate cost of care delivery and efficiencies.

Finance:


  • Ensures human, financial and physical resources within portfolio are utilized effectively and efficiently, ensuring compliance with budget and performance targets. 

People Management: 


  • Manages ongoing individual performance appraisals, development plans and professional goals for their direct reports.
  • Supports recruitment, retention and recognition activities. Participates in candidate screening and interviewing.  Actively welcomes new staff/students to group. 
  • Ensures nursing has a suitable skilled workforce to deliver the services to the expected standard, which is reviewed annually to reflect patient acuity and service needs.

Research:


  • Participates and supports research activities and interprets information from research and utilizes research findings in the development of standards.

Other:

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.


QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA


Education


ESSENTIAL


  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or a healthcare related field or Master’s in Business Administration
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or (3-year Diploma in Nursing) 
  • Registered Nurse

PREFERRED


  • Post graduate specialty qualification/certification

Experience


ESSENTIAL


10+ years of experience with progressive responsibilities in relevant field inclusive of;


  • Nursing Management experience within the relevant specialty area in an acute care hospital
  • Director level experience within specialty area
  • Experience of managing large budgets

PREFERRED


  • Leadership experience in an Academic Medical Center
  • Hospital Commissioning
  • Evidence of publications / presentations in the past 5 years
  • Previous accreditation experience

Certification and Licensure


  • Valid professional nursing license in country of origin
  • Meets licensing requirements of the State of Qatar
