Research Specialist:Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Introduction:


The Aga Khan University was found in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private university, Aga Khan University is a not-for-profit institution and an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network. Starting in 2000, the University expanded to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom and Afghanistan. AKU began life as a health-sciences university.


The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Aga Khan University is a unique/distinguish establishment which serves the clinical laboratory of Aga Khan University Hospital with academic interest. This department is heavily engaged in undergraduate, postgraduate and technologist training programs. It provides professional training for higher degree in four major areas of Pathology (Chemical Pathology, Hematology, Histopathology, and Microbiology). Currently, there are approximately 61 Faculty, including 3 part time, 2 visiting faculty members, and 41 Residents.


Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of, Research SpecialistPathology & Laboratory Medicine. This post is an exciting opportunity to participate in global health policy and implementation research on diagnostic products for tuberculosis This study aims tocreate a country-specific roadmap for the initial introduction and early uptake of new TB diagnostics in Pakistan. The study is run jointly by the Aga Khan University and McGill University, Canada.


This is a grant-funded contractual position.

Responsibilities:


  • The candidate will be an integral part of the research with responsibilities including: 
  • Managing coordination/administration of research activities including setting up of interviews and liaising with key public health stakeholders at the National TB control Program of Pakistan
  • Liaising with regulatory authorities on diagnostics in Pakistan as lead project representative
  • Managing day to day research work and responsibilities
  • Track timelines and follow-up with relevant project staff to ensure project activities, deliverables and their timelines as met as per the project plan
  • Work in collaboration with all levels of the professional associations, health policy researchers or any other external group towards reaching the goals and objectives
  • Participate and organize meetings, seminars and conferences on diagnostic governance for TB in Pakistan
  • Ability to produce high-quality technical documents of qualitative data collected
  • Conducting literature reviews, policy landscape analyses, qualitative interviews and analyses

Requirements:


  • PhD in public health or social science related field (or master’s with 2 years’ field experience)
  • Experience of national or provincial TB programs and diagnostic networks will be given preference
  • Knowledge of the health and diagnostics industry
  • Familiar with the government policies, affairs and technologies on tuberculosis
  • Ability to assess critical situations and give analytical solutions
  • Knowledge of computer applications and programming skills with NVivo and process mapping software
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with attention to detail
