The Aga Khan University - Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (AKU-CRM) jointly with the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences are seeking applications from outstanding and ambitious individuals for the position of Research Associate for the translational vision science program entitled “Stem Cell Based Vision Restoration”.


This project aims to explore the therapeutic potential of stem cells for glaucoma by focusing on several key objectives. It will develop methods to efficiently differentiate stem cells into functional retinal ganglion cells and evaluate the safety and effectiveness of these cells in an animal model of glaucoma. The project will also work on creating safe and efficient techniques for transplanting stem cell-derived retinal ganglion cells into the vitreous cavity of the glaucoma model, while investigating the neuroprotective role of exosomes, antioxidants, and other bioactive molecules in glaucoma treatment

Responsibilities


Reporting to the Faculty, you will perform a varied set of responsibilities which include:


  • Conducting wet lab research at AKU-CRM labs
  • Conducting daily, weekly, and monthly inventory of consumables/reagents required for the team
  • Attending weekly meetings, journal clubs, and research in progress and presenting in these meetings as directed by the assigned faculty
  • Compiling research data
  • Any other assignment as directed by the faculty.

You must have:


1. A Master' degree in the field of Biological Science or relevant field of research


2. Minimum two years’ experience in a research laboratory


3. Candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:


        •   Cell Biology Research (e.g., Tissue culture, Genetic engineering, Flow cytometry)


        •   Molecular Biology Research (e.g., Cloning, PCR, real-time PCR)


        •   Biochemical Techniques such as Western blotting, ELISA, and Protein


purification


•   Tissue harvesting and Histological analysis    


        •   Imaging Techniques such as fluorescent microscopy, confocal microscopy


4. Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks assigned by the faculty


5. Competent in computer usage with command over Microsoft office, statistical and imaging software


6. Sound communication skills. Fluent in English speaking and writing


7. Strong interpersonal skills.


8. Work as part of a high performing team environment
