As the Principal Member of Technical Staff in Identity Engineering organization, you will play a pivotal role in developing, implementing, and maintaining the company’s identity and access management systems. This role is critical in ensuring the security, scalability, and efficiency of the identity infrastructure, aligning with business objectives and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of identity and access management technologies, expertise in distributed system design, strong leadership skills, a strategic mindset, and motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment. Meet our team:

The Identity Engineering team is responsible for providing Identity & Access Management capabilities for PayPal users and partners. We design, develop, and enhance services that are called across every interaction between PayPal and its users and partners. Our solutions must scale across billions of such interactions, working with petabyte plus data, integrating with various other APIs in real-time and providing high availability and configurability to the business. To achieve this, we are always looking at advances in technology and science and tying those back to business needs

Your way to impact:

• Engage with multiple teams of highly talented engineers and architects to design and develop highly scalable, secure and configurable identity solutions that meet the needs of our customers and stakeholders.
• Actively engage with leadership across Product, Architecture, Design and Engineering to design, propose, discuss and refine new features and functionality.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams, IT, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative identity solutions that meet organizational needs.
• Communicate with stakeholders on technical standards, principles, methodologies and trends.

Your day to day:

• Enhance overall system operational characteristics by establishing best practices for code quality, reduction in tech debt, building frameworks or shared techniques to improve engineering effectiveness.
• Identify risks in existing systems & opportunities for refactoring, rearchitecting and other types of tech debt remediation.
• Influence management for driving technical decision-making for the right selection of technology by giving forthright, understandable, and actionable advice.
• Do hands on coding for core components & frameworks, evaluation of newer technologies and guide engineering teams to resolve critical production incidents.
• Work with standards defining organizations to understand the evolving standards, identify gaps, provide inputs on platform gaps, contribute to roadmap planning to build world class CIAM platform.
• Drive decision-making with team members with different views for simple to complex problems with the business requirements to help synthesize the best solution. 

What do you need to bring:

• 15-20 years of experience building successful production software systems and Identity solutions.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• A solid grounding in Computer Science fundamentals
• You must have significant business knowledge and technical expertise in application design and architecture, as well as knowledge of related domains of technical architectures (network, security, and infrastructure engineering), information architectures, and data architectures.
• In-depth knowledge of identity management technologies, protocols, and standards, and competent in designing solutions for reliability, availability, scalability, and performance.
• In-depth knowledge of Identity standards such as OAuth 2.0, Open ID Connect, SCIM etc.
• Must be a self- starter, work independently or as a team member, and have strong communication skills in interfacing with business partners and the Technology.
• Expert in architecting highly scalable distributed systems in Java/J2EE tech stack.
• Strong OOP skills, with ability to analyze requirements and transform into scalable software designs.
• Experience with HTTP, REST APIs and competent designing and building web services/microservices in a commercial setting. Good understanding of REST API standards and documenting REST API contracts using tools like Open API/Swagger. Working knowledge of GraphQL would be a plus.
• Experience with frameworks like Spring etc. and modern design patterns like Reactive Programming.
• Knowledge of RDBMS and NoSQL databases and storage technologies. Good understanding of Oracle, JDBC and ORM frameworks (e.g. Hibernate).
• Experience with messaging platforms like Kafka and distributed cache like Redis is desired.
• Knowledge of observability frameworks like Micrometer and observability tools like Splunk, Datadog etc.
• Competent in software engineering tools (e.g. Java build tools, GitHub) and best practices (e.g. unit testing, test automation, continuous integration, etc.).
• Serve as a strong advocate of code craftsmanship, good coding standards and use of tools that will improve the quality of the delivered code.
• Experience with using Agile/Scrum methodology for software development
