Library Assistant, Faculty of Health Sciences

The FHS Library supports the teaching, learning and research programmes of the University by selecting, acquiring and organizing relevant and up-to-date information resources and ensuring efficient and effective dissemination to all library users. It provides access to comprehensive and multi-disciplinary information resources in print and digital formats. This access is provided through innovative services and state-of-the-art systems. The library is part of WHO EMRO libraries network and is actively involved in various projects.

Job Role / Responsibilities:  


You will be responsible for:                                    


  • counter duties - Periodical and Book Sections of the library
  • providing first-hand guidance/assistance to library users in searching and retrieval of library resources
  • directing complex queries, book fine issues, in-depth research, and reference queries to appropriate senior library staff
  • shelving of books and journals
  • scanning work as a part of digitization project or otherwise
  • maintaining library collections (sorting, overseeing, shelving, shelf reading, etc.)
  • generating daily fine reports and submitting to the relevant department
  • any other task assigned by the supervisor

You should have: 


  • bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or related field
  • 1-2 years of experience preferably in a health science library
  • good knowledge of health sciences literature/resources and literature searching
  • excellent computer skills. Specific job assignments may require knowledge and/or experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database software applications
  • knowledge of NLM, LC, AACR2, RDA, Dublin Core and other library standards and schemas
  • ability to work collaboratively as a team member and serve the public in an effective and courteous way
  • commitment to service, continuous improvement, and innovation with a strong work ethic
  • aptitude to learn new things, willingness to work hard and good interpersonal skills
  • strong customer service attitude
  • be willing to work in rotations (shifts and weekends)
