Introduction to the Aga Khan University:Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, autonomous, and self-governing international university with 13 teaching sites in 6 countries distributed across three continents. What we are looking for:The University is seeking an individual passionate about the complementary role of data governance and data management services. Data Governance: Ensure our data is protected, secure and compliant with regulations of the multiple geographies where we serve. Data Management Services: Undertake and facilitate data mining, data cleaning, data transformation, data modeling, data visualisation. On request, data management services may offer application of statistical and machine learning algorithms to discover patterns, trends, and correlations in the data to derive valuable insights and draw conclusions from the data. 


Job Role/Responsibilities:                                                                                                                    You will be responsible for leading all governance accountabilities and activities for the University’s operations. Additionally, you will facilitate meeting the data services needs of the University for key stakeholders/departments to improve their data management processes and to make data-driven decisions. You will be accountable for university-wide decision-making related to all aspects of data governance and protection and all data services.You will manage a comprehensive governance programme that meets the needs of all departments and functions across the University whilst ensuring compliance with country regulatory requirements. Further, you will ensure that all AKU data is governed, protected and secure and in compliance with regulatory reporting obligations and accreditation requirements. You will oversee all data services needs for AKU including data provisioning, integrity, quality, and reporting; delivering operational analytic reporting that is reliable, scalable, predictable, and available as per the needs of the AKU community.    You will report directly to the Chief Information Officer and work closely with the AKU’s Vice-Provost of Research. 


Data Governance and Protection


  • manage, protect, and ensure the integrity and usefulness of University data
    • identify the sensitivity and criticality of the data
    • ensure that appropriate business processes and policies are in place to keep the data secure, maximize data accuracy, and ensure that responsible staff are trained to maintain data quality
  • define and deliver data governance priorities
    • build teams, processes, and technical systems to support data governance priorities including training and certification of the AKU community
  • support planning and governance to meet the data needs of the AKU community
    • work closely with the CIO and Vice-Provost Research to ensure that the appropriate resources (staff, technical infrastructure, etc.) are dedicated to prioritising data needs and setting/enforcing policies related to data management and use
  • implement university policies and ensure compliance with country laws related to data governance
  • designate data stewards
  • implement data access policies
    • ensure policies and processes are in place to grant access privileges to authorised system users, documenting those with access and controlling the level of access to ensure that individuals have access only to that information for which they have been authorised and that access is removed in a timely fashion when no longer needed

Data Services


  • design and build data repositories/warehouses, and data stores based on the needs of AKU for both clinical work and research
  • define and design logical and physical data models for reporting
  • maintain and support data analytics platforms
  • establish the Analytics function focused on Hospital Operations leveraging the EHR and other Hospital systems
  • deliver key operational dashboards and reports to drive data-driven decision-making across AKU
  • designing, developing, and maintaining business intelligence solutions that meet the needs of AKU
  • provide on request from key stakeholders:
    • techniques for data cleaning
    • creation of data repositories/warehouse and data structures
    • data visualisation
    • installation and support for statistical and data modeling packages
    • working closely with Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), Data Science team, Chief Data Innovation Officer (CDIO), identify resources for Advanced analytical capacity in specialised areas e.g., epidemiological, population health, and others
    • customised support for new and innovative applications arising from research, teaching, and operations.

Eligibility Criteria/Requirements:


You should have:         


  • a post-graduate degree in Computer Science or Information Engineering; a background including statistics is preferred
  • at least 10 years of experience in a leading Data Governance and Data Services organisation within a fast-paced and complex environment across multiple geographies ideally in academics, and/or healthcare delivery including driving change within large organisations
  • a proven track record in the design, development, and implementation of data governance access and protection programmes at a large complex organisation
  • an extensive experience in data mining, data cleaning, data transformation, data modeling, data visualisation, and preferably the application of statistical and machine learning algorithms
  • significant experience building and leading a data governance organisation or practice as well as successful experience in managing large data sets to derive valuable insights and draw conclusions from the data
  • the ability to define and prioritise initiatives while working cross-functionally and managing complex stakeholder relationships
  • strong references that speak to your ability to collaborate and communicate with stakeholders, developers, data scientists, information technology specialists and researchers in an agile environment
  • strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely
  • a genuine excitement for solving complex problems and a strong sense of empathy for the challenges faced by the developing world
