Job Role / Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Manager EHS, the incumbent will perform a variety of environmental, health, and safety functions including Risk Assessment and Premises Vulnerability Surveys. The incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and periodically updating of Safety/ Fire Safety/ HAZMAT and Disaster Preparedness Programs and related policies at Research sites/ operations. The incumbent will carry out facility inspections/ environment rounds at the country-wide Research Sites/ Operations. The incumbent will review safety/fire safety aspects of grant research projects, render advice to management, and maintain a database of grant projects. The incumbent will conduct a variety of Safety, Fire Safety, HAZMAT & Disaster preparedness training, and awareness to the staff involved in Research operations/sites. The incumbent will also conduct incident/ accident investigations on safety/fire safety / HAZMAT-related incidents


Specifically, you will be responsible for:


  • assisting the Manager EHS in the development /implementation/ monitoring/ updating of AKU Safety / Fire Safety / HAZMAT and Emergency Management Program and related policies for country wide Research Sites/ Operations
  • conducting/ participating in Annual Risk Analysis/ Assessment activity for countrywide Research Sites/ Operations and preparing risk mitigation strategies for safety-related observations
  • conducting/participating in Premises Vulnerability Analysis (Facility Safety, Fire Safety Assessment) for New and Existing Research sites across the country, in consultation with relevant stakeholders
  • carry out periodic facility inspections and environmental rounds for countrywide Research Sites/ Operations, prepare and share environmental round reports with relevant stakeholders
  • keep oversight on the Research Sites' Safety Coordinators/ Fire marshals' activities, particularly capacity building on HIRA, level one environment round reports, and training/awareness
  • coordinate with concerned departments/stakeholders for timely completion of Environment Rounds/ Risk Analysis corrective/preventive actions/implementation of control measures for countrywide Research Sites/ Operations.
  • Prepare safety / Fire Safety / HAZMAT/ Disaster awareness/training modules, training calendar, and conduct at country wide research sites/ operations
  • carrying out incident/accident investigation of safety/ fire safety-related incidents.
  • preparing the periodic reports on EHS Activities and Facilities Management & Safety related to research sites/ operations.
  • participating in the AKU Safety Committee for safety & fire safety matters related to research sites/ operations.
  • supervising and ensuring inspection & maintenance program of portable fire extinguishers and other fire systems/ equipment at countrywide research sites/ operations
  • developing and monitoring EHS program KPIs for countrywide research sites/ operations and present in MRC / Safety Committee, as and when required
  • reviewing safety/fire safety/ HAZMAT aspects of grant research projects and sharing assessments with the Manager EHS for uploading on the PeopleSoft Grants Portal., Also maintain an updated database of grant projectsand perform any other relevant task assigned by the Manager EHS/ Regional Director, Safety & Security

Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences / Engineering
  • NEBOSH IGC / ASP Qualified
  • Lead Auditor (ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001)
  • 3 to 5 years practical experience of working in the field of environmental health and safety
  • Possession of EHS-specific training certificates will be considered an additional qualification
  • Knowledge of local/national and international safety standards with particular reference to healthcare
  • Excellent training delivery skills coupled with effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer proficiency, especially in MS Office.
