Job Description

Biotherapeutics in Discovery Research at AbbVie is a multifunctional organization responsible for large molecule discovery supporting all therapeutic areas at AbbVie. As computational approaches to large molecule drug discovery expand, we are seeking a highly qualified individual to drive the future of biotherapeutics where computational methods including AI/ML fully leverage our proprietary data providing a competitive advantage in the discovery of best-in-class and first-in-class medicines. Leveraging state-of-the-art computational infrastructure, machine learning, advanced structural analysis, and physics-based methods the goal will be to deepen our understanding of structure/function and to accelerate the drug discovery process from hit generation to clinical candidate selection. 


We are making significant investments in AI/ML methods to support all elements of biotherapeutics discovery, and we are searching for a leader to bolster our expertise in data science and the application of AI/ML methods for drug discovery programs. You will define and execute Digital Transformation Use Cases aimed at accelerating and streamlining biotherapeutics discovery. She/He will have broad responsibilities to design and execute Use Cases focusing on data capture, organization, and analysis driving the future direction of digital transformation for biotherapeutics discovery. The candidate must have extensive experience with global, cross-functional discovery and development workflows and the ability to define and execute initiatives with a direct and measurable business impact. 


This position will be based in Worcester, MA. 


Key Responsibilities: 


  • Responsible for driving our biotherapeutics AI/ML strategy and overseeing a cross-functional computational team within Biotherapeutics who will develop and execute AI/ML Use Cases aligned with functional strategic priorities. 


  • Contributes to defining a data architecture to enable key data systems that make Biotherapeutics data broadly available, reusable, and machine readable. 


  • Provide the scientific and strategic incorporation of AI/ML tools into existing biotherapeutics discovery workflows. 


  • Strategic Direction: 


  • Interface closely throughout Discovery and Development membership to identify opportunities for incorporating AI/ML strategies to enhance contributions to drug discovery pipeline. 


  • Demonstrates leadership by advising and sharing knowledge and expert opinions with team members, scientists and functional SMEs.  Mentors team members and cross-functional partners to create high-performing teams that deliver results.  


  • Collaborate with experts to leverage external innovation, manage external research collaborations and make decisions based on the review of available information and data. 


  • Manage multiple projects within the digital transformation team, enabling pipeline-driving science and direct portfolio impact. 


  • Scientific Leadership:  


  • Identifies emerging scientific and technological trends from multiple internal and external sources, assesses relevance and integrates applicable trends into AI/ML and Digital Transformation plans and strategies as appropriate. 


  • Interface with AbbVie informatics infrastructure teams to ensure effective deployment of data systems and AI/ML capabilities. 


  • Drives effective implementation and full utilization by intended use



Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. or equivalent in computational chemistry or related discipline, with typically 16+ years (BS), 14+ years (MS), or 8+ years (PhD) of experience. 


  • Capable of leading diverse groups with a range of functional and IT systems experience; maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators. 


  • Strong track record of people, technical, and research project management with significant business impact. 


  • Demonstrated ability to solve critical business and scientific problems using AI/ML 


  • Demonstrated ability to influence others in areas of science and technology 


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills  


  • Established network with key academic and industrial opinion leaders in machine learning and physics based computational research. 


  • Knowledge and experience in state-of-the-art modeling, simulation and machine learning technologies / workflows as well as computing infrastructure to be able to leverage rich data collections to accelerate discovery in a fast paced and creative environment. 


  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 


  • Strong leadership skills with ability to navigate multiple stakeholders while engaging and motivating your staff.
