Position Information Position Type Faculty Faculty Track Clinical Position Title Assistant Clinical Professor/Medical Student Clinical Education Advisor Employment Status Full Time Months 12 Campus Both ME Campuses Description The Medical Student Clinical Education Advisor (MSCEA ) mentors, strategizes and participates in creating educational materials, experiences, and processes that aid students in identifying suitable career goals and clerkship pathways to obtain appropriate graduate medical education (GME ) placement. Through face-to-face and distance education, advising, and support for students, the MSCEA will utilize educational mechanisms, policies, and procedures by which COM faculty and staff can provide compassionate, and supportive guidance to students as it relates to the transition to and management of clerkship experiences, fulfilling program requirements, preparing for the transition from year 3 to year 4, and from year 4 to residency. The primary objective of these job functions include helping students ascertain reasonable career goals, providing guidance and assistance with career-specific questions, and directing students toward self-awareness of skills, and strengths and weaknesses as they relate to a competitive portfolio. The MSCEA will also schedule face-to-face and distance group and individual meetings with students, and provide students with the administrative, social, and academic information that they need to complete their academic program and prepare for transition to residency. This involves managing complex and varied student issues and concerns.

Assist students in transition to core clerkships, elective clinical rotations, GME application process, and GME match. Counsel students to help identify appropriate career goal. Initiate, develop and sustain strong, positive relationships with students to ensure achievement of the objectives of their clerkship training and ensure student success under stressful conditions. Maintain the role of student advocate and advisor and when necessary, identify and recommend appropriate interventions. Provide independent, personal, high touch support to students during the third and fourth years of their program of study. Develop mechanisms to guide and monitor students performance and success in meeting professional and interpersonal competencies. This involves communicating directly with students regarding any deficiencies or challenges. Provide support and guidance to students with particular attention paid to building and maintaining relationships. Evaluate each student’s abilities and personality characteristics in order to tailor guidance and support activities. Proactively contact and interact with students by email, telephone or in person when questions arise regarding coping strategies or stressful conditions. Advise students on compliance with COM department, and institutional policies and procedures. Develop and implement strategies to guide students in appropriate use of Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS ) and its requirements as they pertain to students scheduling and coordinating elective rotations electronically. Assist and guide students in navigating the timeline and requirements for entering the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP ), the National Match Service (NMS ) the AOA residency matching service, the Military Match and any other residency matching programs. Work with Student Support Specialists and other members of the departments of Clinical Education and RSAS to effectively navigate the process of clerkship training. Assist students in finding clinician mentors who can provide guidance and support in their career and residency choices. Follow-up with students that contact other departments to ensure resolution of their issue. Work with members of the Clinical Education Department to identify at-risk students and provide necessary guidance and interventions. Act as a liaison between students and clinical site faculty or clinical education personnel when necessary. Work to integrate the Residency Programs at Clinical Campuses into the clinical education model including the role of residents as teachers and access to education components available through the residency programs. Maintain and foster relationships with Clinical Campus Student Coordinators to provide and integrate ongoing communication between the College and the off-site clinical campus locations. Collaborate with the curriculum department to facilitate a smooth transition from the preclinical to the clinical experience for all students Work directly with the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, the Clinical Coordinator and the Academic Coordinator for Years 3 & 4 to ensure effective student communication and correspondence follow-through within the department. Design and develop methods to obtain ongoing feedback from year 3 and 4 students and use data to assess student needs and progress towards developing competencies. Develop strategies to improve processes within the department and college for the benefit of students. Collaborate with other departments including Academic Affairs (Curriculum), Student Health Center, Registrar and Office of Recruitment, Student and Alumni Services to address common goals and strategies and improve current processes. Participate in committees as they pertain to job function and responsibilities. Maintain accurate and complete records. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Doctoral degree (MD or DO) required, and appropriate board certification in specialty.
Experience with undergraduate or graduate medical education organization and structure. Administrative accomplishments and skills. Exceptional written and oral communication skills. National and regional organization leadership experience preferred. Staff supervisory skills. Formal and informal teaching and learner supervision and evaluation skills. Experience in the structure and function of the academic setting. Ability and passion for building strong personal relationships and serving others. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to travel to clerkship site throughout the Northeastern United States. Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication, and creative problem-solving skills. Ability and willingness to work additional hours occasionally as needed. Ability to relate well with others and perform duties with a high degree of integrity, confidentiality, and adherence to professional ethical standards. High level of customer service, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
