Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Veterinarian specializing in cattle health and welfare to join our meat processing plant team. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the health, safety, and ethical treatment of livestock in compliance with local, national, and international standards. This position also involves monitoring and maintaining the highest animal health and food safety standards throughout the production process.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Health Management:
- Conduct routine health inspections of cattle to assess their well-being and identify any signs of illness or injury.
- Administer vaccinations, medications, and treatments to prevent and manage diseases.
- Oversee quarantine procedures for incoming livestock to ensure disease prevention.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with local and international animal welfare and food safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records for all veterinary procedures, including health inspections, treatment logs, and compliance reports.
- Collaborate with government authorities during audits or inspections related to animal health and welfare.
Welfare and Ethical Practices:
- Ensure humane handling and treatment of cattle during all stages, from arrival to processing.
- Train plant staff on best practices in animal welfare and stress minimization techniques.
Pre-Slaughter Inspection:
- Perform ante-mortem inspections to identify unfit animals and recommend proper action.
- Certify livestock fit for processing as per veterinary standards.
Post-Slaughter Monitoring:
- Oversee the inspection of carcasses for any abnormalities, diseases, or contamination.
- Provide recommendations for carcass utilization or disposal as per guidelines.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with plant management, production teams, and quality assurance departments to maintain high standards of hygiene and safety.
- Provide guidance and technical expertise on cattle health and welfare.
Emergency Response:
- Act promptly during emergencies such as disease outbreaks or injuries to prevent further issues.
- Develop and implement biosecurity and disease control measures.
Skills
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent qualification.
- State or national licensure to practice veterinary medicine.
- Proven experience in cattle veterinary care, preferably in a meat processing or livestock facility.
- Strong knowledge of food safety standards, HACCP, and animal welfare regulations.
- Excellent diagnostic, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Strong communication and leadership skills for training and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Specialized training or certifications in food animal medicine or meat inspection.
- Experience with livestock handling equipment and practices.
- Familiarity with international meat processing standards and export regulations.
