Background
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), the USAID Medicines,
Technologies, and Pharmaceuticals Services (MTaPS) program developed and implemented five surgical antibiotic prophylaxis protocols and urinary tract infections (UTI) management protocols in two pilot MOH hospitals. These protocols aim to rationalize the use of antimicrobials and support the MOH in its efforts to combat the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Jordan in line with the objectives of the AMR National Action Plan (NAP).
Furthermore, MTaPS provided technical support to the MOH Institutional Development and Quality Control Directorate (IDQCD) and the Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacy Directorate (PCPD) to develop the protocol implementation audit tools and key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure the proper implementation and monitoring of the developed protocols. MOH approved and disseminated these protocols to all MOH hospitals for implementation.
To continue these efforts, MTaPS plans to support the MOH in institutionalizing the protocols by hiring a consultant to conduct technical orientation workshops for AMR committees from all 27 MOH hospitals. These committees will be responsible for implementing the protocols in their respective hospitals and monitor adherence to them, aiming to use evidence-based guidelines to rationalize antimicrobial use and ensure patient safety.
