Technical Writer

Job Description


The Role


Technical writers at SUSE support the Product & Solution Documentation department on documentation projects by researching, writing and editing documentation for SUSE products and solutions. Collaborating with other teams, technical writers are responsible for maintaining and modernizing existing documentation for the assigned products and solutions.


Our ideal candidate is passionate about creating and building modern documentation to help people understand and use SUSE’s cloud native projects. They enjoy and are adept at working with community members, open source contributors, talented engineers, fellow technical writers, and developer advocates in developing and maintaining software documentation. They will have open source development experience, a passion for community engagement, and experience working collaboratively across teams and disciplines.


Critical to achieving excellent results will be advanced Linux, container and Kubernetes knowledge, the ability to independently research, and the willingness to test the documentation.


Focus Areas


In this role, you will work with a team of talented and motivated engineers, technical writers, developer advocates, and managers to develop effective documentation for SUSE’s cloud native projects, which include SUCE Rancher Prime, k3s, RKE2, SUSE Virtualization, SUSE Storage, SUSE Observability, SUSE Security, and other projects. Responsibilities include:


  • Independently researching topics.


  • Working with cross-functional teams to understand product features, changes and develop effective documentation in a timely manner.


  • Partnering with subject matter experts to document complex architectural details and develop reference guides.


  • Collaborating with fellow team members to develop efficient processes that allow the Documentation team to support multiple project needs.


  • Developing best practices that can be used across projects to achieve consolidation/standardization.


  • Delivering documentation on time and in scope.


Preferred Experience & Skills


  • Typically a first level university degree in Technical Communications, Computer Science or related technical/communications field and a minimum of 3+ years related experience (or equivalent work experience).


  • Three or more years experience as a technical writer in the IT industry; preferably in a team of writers.


  • Excellent technical writing skills and ability to peer review technical documents for grammar, content, and style of writing.


  • Solid knowledge in technologies that support Cloud Native Development


  • Solid Linux knowledge, including basic server administration experience and familiarity with the command line.


  • Expertise in developing documentation as code using source formats such as Markdown, AsciiDoc and frameworks such as Docusaurus, Antora etc


  • Expertise in the standard GitHub workflows.


  • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts in a simplified form


  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize a variety of tools and technologies to support multiple technologies.


  • Very good communication skills, both written and oral.


  • Excellent English language skills (reading and writing) are mandatory.
