Role description:


We are now recruiting a seasoned leader to fill our current vacancy of a Technical Director (Civils) to work on various kinds of Water projects in the UK region from our Design Centers in India.


Job Purpose:


  • Provide civils discipline leadership within the water team, establishing and consolidating relationships across Arcadis and our client base, taking ownership for the delivery of civil engineering, and associated quality, supporting the delivery of projects, or specialised components of projects.
  • Lead and shape the GEC water civils team capability, ensuring optimal resource recruitment, deployment and management for projects and frameworks.
  • Engaging with civil engineering focused peers in the UK, providing leadership that connects UK and GEC teams at all levels. 
  • Undertake (as required) senior project roles to lead the delivery of major projects.
  • Support the management of risk on major projects by leading independent technical reviews and following up review findings.
  • Roles at this level should continuously seek to enhance the business at a strategic and individual level, executing strategy to deliver tangible results for the Arcadis business. 
  • Roles at this level provide inspiring leadership to our people and support them to realise their potential.

Role accountabilities:


  • Lead by example to promote continual improvement in SHE performance across the business, including ‘safe by design’ initiatives and any specific personal targets.
  • Build internal relationships to identify and realise service line delivery efficiency opportunities, ensuring that client expectations and Arcadis’ commercial objectives are met or exceeded.
  • Provide professional leadership at a civils discipline level and be the guardian of technical quality for the GEC civils team.
  • Evaluate technical competence of civils staff proposed for projects, supporting our people to realise their potential, identifying and providing specific training and mentoring needs.
  • Working closely with the GEC BA Manager and UK discipline lead, supporting the recruitment and development of the GEC civils team, setting objectives and managing performance, to ensure that the team has the resources and capability to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensure that complex technical projects are effectively led with good communication and collaboration between GEC, UK and its partner organisations, proactively leading the resolution of technical issues.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the civil engineering sector.
  • In conjunction with UK colleagues, establish and agree key performance targets and financial budgets for the civils team in order to optimise business performance in line with set objectives.
  • Perform independent technical reviews for complex and major projects that are classified as high risk to the Arcadis business.
  • Encourage innovative and entrepreneurial thinking amongst team members.

Qualifications & Experience:


  • Have a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Desirable: Have achieved Member and Chartered professional status with the ICE.
  • 25+ years of experience

Required Competencies:


Candidates must:


  • Be able to demonstrate the successful technical/design leadership of a large (>50FTE) team.
  • Have experience of delivering civil engineering solutions in complex multi-discipinary projects.
  • Be experienced in the design and design management of the civil engineering elements of multi-disciplinary projects in the water sector including pipeline (infrastructure), water and wastewater (non-infrastructure) projects.
  • Be experienced in delivering projects in a Design & Build and client-side environment from feasibility and concept stage through detailed design delivery. 
  • Have a sound and practicable understanding of structural and geotechnical engineering principles.
  • Have a sound and practicable understanding of hydraulic design principles.
  • Have a sound and practicable understanding of process design principles.
  • Have experience of and be capable of fulfilling multi-disciplinary technical review and assurance roles.
  • Lead continuous improvement in ‘Safety by Design’ and CDM compliance. 
  • Have an awareness of key UK legislation, hazards and safe systems of work.
  • Possess strong stakeholder management skills, e.g. awareness and understanding of other discipline inputs and how this influences civils solutions.
  • Be able to think strategically.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Cultural awareness and experience of working as part of international project teams
  • Possess a sound understanding of the principles of sustainable design. 
  • Have a strong understanding of the principles of commercial management and project delivery.
  • Be focussed on health, safety and all dimensions of people welfare
  • Have a strong focus on designing and deploying effective project delivery processes.
  • Be capable of building credible peer-to-peer relationships with other senior stakeholders.
