About The Internal Audit Group At American Express
Our Internal Audit Group is a worldwide function with 300+ team members and offices across nine countries within American Express. Our mission is to protect and enhance organizational value by providing independent, objective, risk-based assurance, advisory services and to influence the way the company manages risk.
We are committed to growing our audit staff significantly as we continue to expand and enhance the Internal Audit Group. Our assurance and risk professionals have diverse backgrounds including internal controls, consumer compliance, technology, operational risk, financial accounting, data analytics, and banking operations. Our audit teams align to key risk areas and business units to ensure IAG can provide comprehensive and risk-based audit coverage. In addition, IAG has a Professional Practices group responsible for managing audit operations, quality, and standards; regulatory relations; reporting; training and professional development; and key internal capabilities and technologies.
How will you make an impact in this role?
- Perform in-depth audits to evaluate the effectiveness of our model risk management processes, including development, validation, and governance functions.
- Effectively challenge model developers and validation teams to ensure model risks are accurately identified, documented, and managed.
- Validate different types of models for compliance with regulatory standards and internal requirements, including those for Credit, Fraud, Marketing, Market Risk, CCAR and CECL models.
- Rapidly acquire knowledge of AXPs business operations, products, and services to identify and mitigate model risk effectively.
- Deliver actionable insights from audit findings, focusing on enhancing model risk management controls.
- Assist with validation of remediation activities and projects in place to address regulatory gaps. This will involve reviewing applicable regulatory requirements, assessing/ confirming compliance gaps, and evaluating management’s remediation activities to confirm that the regulatory requirements are effectively addressed.
- Pursue continuous professional development to maintain the highest standards of internal audit practice.
- Collaborate across the broader Internal Audit team on initiatives, sharing knowledge and supporting company-wide objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
- 0-5 years of relevant work experience in Model Risk Management (1st/2nd/3rd line) in Banking.
- Master’s Degree in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Financial Engineering, or Business.
- Experience with at least one of the following programming languages or data analysis tools: Python, R, SAS, or SQL.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex concepts clearly.
- Experience with at least one of the following model types: Credit, Fraud, Marketing, AI/ML, Market Risk, Regulatory (CCAR, CECL) models.
- Possess a thorough understanding of SR 11-7: Guidance on Model Risk Management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with core AI/ML concepts and techniques, algorithms like XGBoost, Neural Networks, etc.
- Basic understanding of NLP concepts, Embeddings, Transformers, BERT, etc.
- Relevant Professional Certification (FRM/PRM, CFA or equivalent).
- Proficiency in spreadsheets, dynamic tables, and designing queries for large databases.
