Role purpose


Accelya has a pivotal and rapidly growing Postgres estate and this is an opportunity for an experienced Postgres engineer to get in at the ground level and define how we deliver and operate our global Postgres estate.


As the lead Postgres engineer you will develop architectures, standards, operating procedures and strategies for the deployment, configuration and management of Accelya’s fast-growing Postgres estate.


You will also act as the Postgres subject matter expert for our partners in the software engineering teams, enabling them to develop Postgres-based applications that are secure, highly available, efficient and fast.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Develop standards for deploying and configuring Postgres and the technologies it depends upon (storage, operating system, network, etc)
  • Define procedures for the deployment, configuration and operation of Postgres on various platforms including AWS, VMWare Cloud on AWS and ‘on-prem’
  • Develop automation to deploy, configure and operate all Postgres instances consistently and efficiently
  • Design and implement monitoring, alerting and self-healing strategies that maintains the health and availability of Accelya’s growing Postgres estate
  • Hardening Accelya’s Postgres instances to prevent the theft or ransom of data, and to adhere to strict regulatory requirements
  • Design and deploy architectures and configuration that maintain availability in the event of component or site failure
  • Train the wider database engineering teams on the deployment and management of Postgres so that Accelya can deliver Postgres services 24*7
  • Collaborate with our software engineering teams to help them deliver secure, highly available, high performing applications on Postgres

Knowledge, Experience & Skills


  • A proven track record of developing and documenting standards, policies and procedures
  • Experience developing automation that increases consistency and reduces human effort using tools like Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Salt and Chef
  • Experience identifying the cause of complex Postgres incidents and problems
  • A proven track record in helping application developers leverage Postgres securely and effectively
  • Experience designing and implementing monitoring, alerting and self-healing strategies
  • A deep knowledge of how to install, configure, patch, upgrade, backup and restore Postgres, as well as maintain its availability and performance
  • Knowledge and/or experience of other open-source database platforms such as MySQL, MongoDB, and Cassandra will be beneficial
