As a Software Engineer working at Medtronic, you will contribute to the core software that controls the motion of robotic arms and surgical instruments. You will create software solutions that run on a real-time embedded platform to deliver high-bandwidth, precise and robust response. This role will involve working with kinematics, linear algebra, and matrix manipulation, that’s developed as part of our software to translate input commands at the surgeon interface into robot and instrument motion at the bedside. In addition, this role will include developing and maintaining kinematic software that is part of our surgeon console-based training simulator, as well as a myriad of kinematic visualizer tools.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:


  • Develop core control/kinematic software for our Hugo
  • Integrate and test software designs on hardware and with the rest of the robotic platform
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of verification methods
  • Partner with the greater software organization, systems engineering, and validation groups
  • Define and review subsystem and software requirements
  • Conduct software and product hardware-in-the-loop testing and create models and prototypes
  • Act as an independent reviewer of Simulink models to ensure all software meets quality standards
  • Prepare and participate in software and controller design reviews
  • Contribute and participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reports
     

Required knowledge and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Controls, Automation & Robotics) and at least 4 to 7 years of relevant engineering experience OR an advanced degree and at least 3 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Design, develop, and maintain kinematic control algorithms using Simulink and MATLAB/C++
  • Proficient use of modeling & simulation software (MATLAB/Simulink strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with multi-body kinematics and dynamics
  • Familiarity with matrix manipulation in graphical and text-based programming languages
  • Experience with ROS, Unity, or other kinematics / physics simulation environments
  • Signal processing experience (discrete/digital methods and algorithms)
  • Experience with real-time software on microprocessor-based systems and developing software in a Linux environment
  • Experience in mathematical modeling of complex systems
  • Integrating mechanical and electrical hardware and software, particularly in an embedded context
  • Medical product development process highly desired-regulatory processes, safety considerations, hands-on experience with medical/surgical devices/instruments
  • Experience with diverse, cross functional teams; Geodiversity spanning an international environment is a bonus
  • Fluency in English is required
