Who will you be working with?
The Wabtec Passenger Information Management System (PIMS) team is responsible for delivering real-time transit information solutions that enhance the passenger experience. The team develops and maintains high-availability backend services that integrate with multiple data sources, including SCADA, CAD, and AVL systems, to provide accurate arrival predictions, automated announcements, and real-time service updates.
The team works collaboratively with software engineers, system architects, project managers, and transit agency stakeholders to ensure seamless data integration and reliable system performance. Using a mix of functional programming (Erlang, Elixir), messaging protocols (RabbitMQ, AMQP), and real-time databases (PostgreSQL, Mnesia), the PIMS team builds scalable and robust solutions for public transportation networks.
Members of the team take ownership of backend services, protocol integrations, and system optimizations while adhering to best practices in software development, testing, and deployment. With a focus on continuous improvement and innovation, the team actively explores new technologies to enhance system performance and reliability.
How will you make a difference?
As a member of the PIMS Platform group, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend solutions utilizing Erlang. Your role will involve implementing in-memory caching strategies, optimizing SQL queries in PostgreSQL, and ensuring reliable data transmission through AMQP and TCP/IP protocols. You will play a key role in developing and maintaining RESTful APIs, troubleshooting system issues, and contributing to the evolution of our distributed system architecture.
What do we want to know about you?
You must have:
Proven experience as a Functional Programming Developer, with expertise in languages such as Clojure, Erlang, or similar functional languages.
Strong understanding of PostgreSQL, including the ability to write and optimize complex SQL queries.
Experience in designing and implementing communication protocols such as AMQP and TCP/IP.
Proficiency in developing, maintaining, and consuming RESTful APIs.
Advanced skills in debugging, performance optimization, and system troubleshooting.
Familiarity with version control systems (Git, GitLab) and continuous integration tools.
Ability to thrive in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Experience with distributed systems and fault-tolerant architectures.
Familiarity with other messaging protocols and queuing systems.
Knowledge of Erlang-based frameworks and tools for scaling and optimizing systems.
Exposure to Agile development methodologies and best practices for collaborative development.

Develop and maintain scalable backend systems using Erlang and Elixir.
Utilize Mnesia for efficient in-memory caching and real-time data management.
Write and optimize SQL queries to enhance the integration of PostgreSQL with backend applications.
Design and implement communication protocols using AMQP and TCP/IP for seamless data transmission.
Develop and maintain RESTful APIs to facilitate interaction with frontend applications and external systems.
Troubleshoot and debug issues, optimizing code for performance, scalability, and reliability.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate backend solutions across various platforms.
Stay up to date with the latest functional programming and backend technologies to improve system architecture.
What about the physical demands of the job?
This role primarily involves working at a computer for extended periods. Occasional travel to team meetings or conferences may be required.
