Roles & Responsibilities:


We are looking for a passionate Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to support, build and scale the personalization and search platforms for the global streaming app Max as well as ongoing and future streaming initiatives. You are excited about working in a fast-moving environment that fosters engineering and operational excellence with continuous development, deployment, experimentation, quality assurance, and collaboration. You will bring an obsession with our customers along with skills for rapid feature iteration. In your role, you will be working in a team of passionate software engineers, machine engineers and applied researchers contributing to a system that serves 100+ million users worldwide.


  • Contribute to building and scaling a recommendation system that powers a state-of-the-art personalization experience to users across Max, Discovery+ and other WBD offerings


  • Collaborate with applied data science and machine learning engineers to improve quality, stability, resilience of search and personalization platforms.


  • Author, test, review, and optimize production-level code in Java/Go and Python while executing best practices in version control and code integration.


  • Motivate, inspire and create a culture of experimentation and data-driven innovation while constantly striving to be an advocate for doing what is right for our customers


  • Contribute technical documentation to support knowledge transfer and sharing


  • Troubleshoot issues in recommendation systems as front-line support


What to Bring:


  • 5+ years of experience developing scalable solutions, frameworks, tools, and strategies across backend services


  • 5+ years of strong coding experience using Java or Python


  • Great understanding of distributed systems challenges, micro-service-based architectures, and asynchronized communication (e.g. using gRPC and Kafka).


  • Ability to implement alerting, metrics, and logging using tools like Prometheus, CloudWatch, Kibana, PagerDuty.


  • Has a track record of having built multiple high-performance, stable, scalable systems that have been successfully shipped to customers in production.


  • Strong knowledge and experience in multiple test types including unit, functional, integration, API, load and performance tests.


  • Experience in private and public API design and cross-service integrations


  • Experience with software engineering best practices (e.g., unit testing, design patterns, building maintainable code, performance)


  • Familiarity with a range of database technologies, encompassing both SQL and NoSQL options.


  • Usage and deep understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS/GCP services.


  • Experience building, operating, and owning services. Implementing operational excellence mechanisms including alerting, metrics, and logging


  • Ability to technically collaborate with partners


  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, be comfortable to contribute to technical documentation and on-call support


  • Experience with CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions, Jenkins etc.


  • Familiarity with agile practices and processes


  • Ability to work with minimal instructions on day-to-day work, able to consume and self- start with general instructions on new assignments. Participates in an inclusive and supportive engineering culture.


Preferred:


  • DevOps experience (AWS preferred) architecting, configuring cloud technology stacks (Network Security, API Gateways, VPCs, CDNs, Kafka/MKS, Kubernetes, EKS, Jenkins configuration, CI/CD configurations etc.)
