Senior Manager – Software Engineering, Technology Innovation Lab

Part of the Artificial Intelligence & Data function of the Amgen Technology and Medical Organizations (ATMOS), the Technology Innovation Lab (TechLab) is a center for exploration and innovation, focused on integrating and accelerating new technologies and methods that deliver measurable value and competitive advantage. We’ve built algorithms that predict bone fractures in patients who haven’t even been diagnosed with osteoporosis yet. We’ve built software to help us select clinical trial sites so we can get medicines to patients faster. We are seeking a Senior Manager of Software Engineering to lead the Technology Innovation Lab’s software engineering practice. This role is integral to developing top-tier talent, setting engineering standard methodologies, and evangelizing full-stack development capabilities across the organization. The Senior Manager will be responsible for driving the successful delivery of strategic business initiatives by overseeing the technical architecture, managing talent, and establishing a culture of excellence in software engineering.
The key aspects of this role involve
(1) Prior hands-on experience building full stack applications
(2)Management experience in leading software engineering teams and talent development
(3) Delivering initiatives and applications at enterprise scale.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Talent Development & Leadership: Acquire, lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of software engineers, ensuring continuous skill development through coaching, training, and professional growth opportunities.
Best Practice Establishment: Define and implement software engineering best practices including coding standards, design patterns, and DevOps practices to foster an efficient and high-quality development environment.
Full-Stack Development Evangelism: Promote and drive full-stack development practices within Amgen’s engineering teams, advocating the adoption of the latest technologies and tools for front-end, back-end, and cloud-native solutions.
Delivery of Business Initiatives: Oversee the end-to-end delivery of business-critical projects, ensuring that software solutions align with business goals, are delivered on time, and meet quality standards.
Collaboration & multi-functional Leadership: Work closely with product managers, technical leads, and multi-functional teams to identify and prioritize opportunities for improving software development processes and technical delivery.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Encourage a culture of innovation by exploring new technologies, methodologies, and tools that improve software delivery and enhance engineering productivity.
What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:
Master’s degree and 8 to 10 years of Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. OR
Bachelor’s degree and 10 to 14 years of Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. OR
Diploma and 14 to 18 years of Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
Atleast 3 years in a leadership role
Deep understanding of software engineering standard methodologies and overall software product development lifecycle, including version control, CI/CD, TDD, and agile methodologies.
Proficiency with backend languages and frameworks (Python, FastAPI, Flask preferred).
Proficiency in web technologies (JavaScript, Node.js, React, Angular).
Experience with databases (Postgres/DynamoDB)
Experience managing and deploying infrastructure in at least one cloud provider such as AWS (preferred), Azure, or Google Cloud.
Experience with microservices architecture and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
Strong project management skills with a proven track record of delivering large-scale software solutions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of data security, privacy regulations, and scalable software solutions.
Familiarity with enterprise software systems in life sciences or healthcare domains.
Familiarity with big data platforms and experience in data pipeline development (Databricks, Spark).
Familiarity with AI concepts such as traditional AI, generative AI, and agentic AI, with the ability to learn and adopt new skills quickly.
Soft Skills:
Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical collaborators.
Ability to foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
High degree of initiative and self-motivation.
Ability to mentor and develop team members, promoting their growth and success.
