Job Description


Be responsible for selection, quality and reliability of parts used in Aptiv Products. Act as the in-house specialist for component portfolios. Define and maintain commodity strategy in order to use the appropriate technology parts. Interface with design engineers, commodity specialists, and vendor personnel to resolve problems and issues. Investigate alternate component technologies and suppliers to reduce cost while improving component quality and reliability.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Component Selection, Obsolescence Management


  • Provide component level expertise and consultation to Design Engineers


  • Component Ownership (Requirements review, Selection, Usage and Issue addressing) of parts being used.


  • Component Applications knowledge


  • First hand analysis of Product team's specific requirements in selecting the right component for Customer RFQs. (Component & System)


  • Conduct failure analysis/corrective action with suppliers. Analyze component failure trends.


  • Design, Conduct, and document Qualification Tests of new electronic components considered for new designs.


  • Manage / create standard component qualification processes where needed.


  • Facilitate communication and interactions between suppliers and design teams.


  • Assist in identifying and resolving manufacturing problems.


  • Support purchasing team during negotiations, part creation


  • BOM health management


  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess structural integrity and optimize component performance under various load conditions.


  • Collaborate with suppliers to select appropriate materials for mechanical components, considering strength, weight, cost, and manufacturing capabilities.


  • Develop and review technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and manufacturing instructions.


  • Conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and root cause analysis to identify and resolve design issues.


  • Oversee the prototyping and testing of new components, ensuring they meet design requirements and pass validation tests.


  • Lead cross-functional teams to address production and design challenges, ensuring timely delivery of products within budget.


  • Manage the lifecycle of components, from concept to production, ensuring design changes are incorporated effectively.


Required Skills:


  • Minimum 2-7 years of experience as an a component engineer dealing with Mechanical components or Applications engineer.


  • Expert in finding alternates suitable for designs


  • Knowledge on Mechanical components such as Headers, connectors, screws nuts, bolts, or custom mechanical components such as brackets, TIM.  


  • Knowledge with product families and technology roadmaps.


  • Technical knowledge on manufacturing, quality and reliability issues related to mechanical components.


  • Knowledge of ESD, MSL, RoHS, and REACH electronic component compliance    


  • Experience in preparing customer and/or management level briefings.


  • Create detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and specifications for mechanical components using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD).


  • Lead the design and optimization of mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems while ensuring they meet project specifications and performance standards.


  • Ensure designs adhere to manufacturing and assembly constraints, and contribute to the development of design for manufacturability (DFM) guidelines.


  • Understanding of the complete lifecycle of mechanical components, from initial concept through design, prototyping, testing, production, and end-of-life.


  • Gap analysis of test results and validation of components to ensure they meet required performance criteria, including stress testing, fatigue testing, and environmental testing.


  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure timely production and delivery of components.


  • Address and resolve design and production issues, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.


  • Provide technical support to other departments as needed, including production and quality assurance teams.


  • Prepare and present technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and manufacturing instructions.


  • Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate and select components and materials, ensuring quality, cost, and lead-time considerations are met.


  • Evaluate the performance of suppliers and drive improvements in product quality and delivery.


  • Ensure all components meet the quality standards, regulatory requirements, and industry specifications.


  • Conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify potential risks and mitigate them during the design phase.


  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives in the design and manufacturing process to reduce costs and improve efficiency.


Skills & knowledge:


  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, material science, and manufacturing processes.


  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis.


  • Proficient in component lifecycle management and design for manufacturability (DFM).


  • Familiarity with quality control processes and industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM).


  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform root cause analysis.


Desired Education:


  • Bachelors or Masters in Mechanical Engineering or Automotive engineering.  


  • Strong understanding of Mechanical Engineering &  manufacturing processes.
