Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will report directly to the Senior Manager, Information Systems and support the Infrastructure Operations team. This role will include the main responsibility for all activities related to VMware/ESX administration in a 24x7 regulated environment, while working on virtualization servers and related technologies that'll be introduced into the Amgen environment.
The Infrastructure Operations team is the global enterprise administration group that handles physical and virtual hosting, including private and public cloud hosting options, operating systems, databases, middleware, storage, and backup. The experienced incumbent will be responsible for VMware configuration and operations management, along with daily systems management tasks in a sophisticated environment.
Job responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Support the service owner peers, led service providers in the development, delivery, continuous improvement of the technology service and ensuring the offering is aligned with the key principles of service ownership listed below:
- Meet the needs of the business needs, ensuring cost effectiveness, compliance, reliability and resilience
- Perform advanced monitoring, administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of virtualization technologies, including VMware, ESX, Nutanix, Dell VXrail and VMware vSAN.
- Responsible for ongoing management of the VMware infrastructure.
- Performs necessary systems maintenance in accordance with VMware standard methodologies and company change management policies.
- Ongoing support for Business Continuity and High Availability.
- Recommend changes to procedures which result in operational optimization
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis reviews when applicable.
- Rotational 24x7 On-Call Support
- Contribute to the review/approval of virtual server design decisions to ensure that application hosting solutions exhibit high levels of performance, security, scalability, maintainability, reliability upon deployment
- Support the design and implementation of enterprise virtual server solutions that meet business requirements and are in line with defined strategies and compliance requirements, and are fiscally sound
- Support IT projects to validate alignment with our strategic goals and technical standards
- Support projects from a technical aspect and provide guidance and direction to less experienced technical staff and managed service providers, including installations and upgrades of operating systems (OS), backup/recovery strategies, and high availability configurations
- Establish and implement a patching schedule for the OS and firmware
- Monitor security bulletins to obtain information of potential threats; analyze and lead vital security patch implementations to ensure ongoing system security
- Use software and hardware tools to identify, analyze, and diagnose sophisticated problems and factors affecting performance
- Serve as a resource to colleagues with less experience
- Direct the work of other staff members as needed
- Operate server automation solutions and enterprise-wide scripts using tools
- Provide performance analysis and tune systems. use software and hardware tools to identify, analyze, and diagnose complex problems and factors affecting performance.
- Use capacity planning tools
- Follow IT processes and change management practices
- Identify and improve existing departmental processes for efficiency, reliability and consistency
- Contribute in designing, documenting, and fruition of disaster recovery activities and associated tests
- Support audit and security compliance issues (Amgen & government regulations)
WinWhat we expect of you
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree and 1 to 3 years of Information Systems and VMware server administration experience OR
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of Information Systems and VMware server administration experience OR
- Diploma and 7 to 9 years of Information Systems and VMware server administration experience
Preferred Qualifications:- Industry Certifications and experience with VMware server administration
- Experience managing and administering VMware systems, and related services & monitoring systems
- Scripting and ITIL experience and managing regulated systems (preferably in Pharma sector)
- Understanding of operating system and network tools for troubleshooting performance issues
- Solid understanding of Clustering and HA configurations
- Excellent data-driven problem solving and analytical skills
- Demonstrable experience as part of a commitment team
- Skill in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues
- In-depth knowledge VMware technology
- Experience configuring VMware HA and DRS, VMware ESX/ESXi, VMware Virtual Center vSphere
- Daily Support of tools and functions for virtual infrastructure support (VMware HA, monitoring, etc)
- Solid grasp of TCP/IP networking fundamentals
- Outstanding troubleshooting ability
- Experience with command-line style management utilities, such as vMA/PowerCLI/Perl/etc
