The Product Research and Development (PRD) organization strives to develop and deliver quality medicines to patients. The portfolio consists of development and commercialization of insulins, small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, novel therapeutic proteins, peptides, oligonucleotide therapies and gene therapy systems. This organization is a multidisciplinary group that works collaboratively with therapeutic business units and manufacturing to deliver the incredibly exciting Lilly clinical portfolio to patients around the world.
The Lilly Capability Centre India (LCCI) located in Bengaluru India is a strategic investment made by Lilly to attract top talent from the vibrant academic and professional environment in India and deploy them to develop and enable critical capabilities for Lilly. The LCCI group in India houses a PRD team that works closely with the PRD team in Indianapolis in enabling the delivery of Lilly’s portfolio.
Education Requirements
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or MS with 10+ years of relevant experience.
- 0-5 years of experience in a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company, or academia
Position Requirements
- Possess a deep technical expertise and training in modern synthetic chemistry and use this knowledge to challenge the status quo and drive solutions to the most important scientific problems, in a fast-paced environment.
- Have a demonstrated track record of novel contributions to chemical design and mechanism-based problem solving as part of project driven goals such as synthesis of complex molecules and/or methodology development.
- Experience using retrosynthetic tools (e.g. Synthia, scifinder) for route design and understanding of basic requirements for commercialization aspects
- Embrace and celebrate diversity by using a relevant but unique background and set of experiences to contribute new ideas and thoughts to deliver solutions for a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication (oral, written), organizational, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrate learning agility across modalities (small molecule, peptide, and oligonucleotide). Develop new synthetic routes using modern technologies, including continuous processing, automated reaction screening, and computational chemistry.
- Help drive and develop the commercial manufacturing strategy to deliver robust chemical processes that are ultimately suitable for large-scale manufacturing.
- Engage externally through presentations and publications. Identify, partner, and develop chemistry innovations to complement existing capabilities and areas of focus and incorporate these innovations across the portfolio of assets.
- Ability to understand and interpret spectroscopic (NMR, IR) data and chromatographic (LC) data is required.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Complete digital assessments of emerging small molecule assets in early phase chemistry and tolerability supplies for conjugates/peptides/oligos
- Complete retrosynthetic evaluations of emerging assets and create work plans to inform proof of concept/Reduction to practice studies
- Maintain internal Synthetic Route Database
- Use software packages (e.g. Mirablis) to aid impurity purge prediction and document control strategy
- Optimization of synthesis routes with digital technologies and work closely with process and computational chemists and data scientists.
- Work closely with computational and data scientists to leverage latest technology for the advancement of synthesis route design.

- Limited international travel (0 – 5%) will be required
