Job Description

Candidates must demonstrate a history of strong technical depth, a broad base of modeling skills, scientific leadership, and a willingness to promote a collaborative, team-based approach to problem solving.  The candidate will have a combination of deep fundamental mathematical/science/engineering knowledge and strong mathematical modeling skills, and have the proven ability to apply these skills to solve problems in reaction systems and other unit operations, at both small and large scale.

Specifically, the candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • Designs, develops, and applies new, customized computer models/tools and also applies, where necessary and available, commercial computer modeling software
  • Experience in process development, scale up and technology transfer to manufacturing and validation
  • Experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques and their application to solve process engineering problems
  • Contributes to research projects and programs focused on development of specific small molecule and/or synthetic peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for clinical and commercial use
  • Designs data-rich experiments that fully utilize automated lab reactors equipped with process analytical technology probes.  Drives experimental design towards the collection of kinetic, thermodynamic and transport data in any type of unit operations to design impurity control and perform scale-up to manufacturing scale
  • Promotes general research and development effectiveness and productivity enhancement through application of computer modeling, simulation, and optimization

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the modeling activities for small molecule and/or synthetic peptide drug substance development with following responsibilities:
    • Design and develop model-derived solutions to support clinical and commercial manufacturing processes (batch and continuous) which enable material supply and a robust registration data package.
    • Contribute to project planning by identifying and communicating design opportunities and process risks to management to enable sound business decisions.
    • Utilize internal and external modeling, and experimental resources to mitigate those risks before they impact the project delivery timeline
  • Works with product teams to provide technical oversight to enable process scale up and technology transfer to manufacturing sites
  • Work with partners across PR&D to identify decisions that can be informed by data science approaches.
  • Apply the right data science tool/methodology to inform and influence decisions.
  • Develop tools/algorithms to mine patterns in existing data to create a recommendation on future questions to consider.
