This role requires a highly experienced and strategic leader with extensive expertise in robotics, AI, and engineering, combined with proven leadership skills. Below is a summary of the key components of this position:
Strategic Leadership and Vision
- Develop and implement a comprehensive robotics strategy across various platforms, including quadrupeds, bipeds, humanoid robots, bionics, and industrial robots.
- Lead cross-functional integration of Perception, Mechanical, and Edge AI teams to ensure cohesive, high-performance robotic systems.
- Drive the creation of a technology roadmap for continuous advancements in robotic locomotion, perception, and AI, with an emphasis on balancing short-term goals with long-term innovation.
Overseeing Robotics Development
- Guide the design and development of complex robotic systems across various types:
- Quadrupeds/Bipeds: Focus on balance, stability, and adaptability for dynamic industrial environments.
- Humanoids: Ensure robots can perform complex, human-like tasks, emphasizing precision and dexterity.
- Bionics: Oversee bio-inspired robots that mirror biological movements for enhanced performance.
- Industrial Systems: Lead the development of industrial robots designed for high-demand manufacturing and automation environments.
Leadership of Perception and Sensing Team
- Spearhead the creation of advanced sensing systems that combine LiDAR, depth cameras, and stereo vision for 3D mapping.
- Oversee computer vision tasks like object detection, classification, and scene segmentation, and implement SLAM algorithms for autonomous navigation.
Mechanical Engineering and Robotics Design
- Lead mechanical architecture development for robots, focusing on resilience, lightweight materials, and ergonomic design.
- Ensure precision motion control, adaptive actuation systems, and rigorous prototyping and testing processes.
Edge AI and Real-Time Processing
- Optimize real-time AI models and processing systems, ensuring low-latency performance with edge computing.
- Deploy AI models efficiently on platforms like NVIDIA Jetson and develop continuous learning pipelines for improved robot autonomy.
Project Management and Resource Allocation
- Define project milestones, manage cross-functional teams, and oversee budgets for robotics development initiatives.
- Implement effective risk management strategies, ensuring project timelines and resources are optimized.
Team Development and Mentorship
- Build and nurture a high-performing team environment while providing mentorship and career development opportunities.
- Collaborate with HR to attract and retain top talent in robotics and engineering.
Innovation, R&D, and Industry Engagement
- Lead R&D initiatives for cutting-edge technologies, foster industry partnerships, and engage with open-source robotics and AI communities.
- Ensure the protection of intellectual property developed by the team and encourage patent filings.
Compliance, Safety, and Standards
- Ensure all robotics systems meet industry standards for performance, safety, and reliability.
- Establish safety protocols and promote ethical AI development within robotics systems.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields.
- Experience: 15+ years in robotics, with at least 7 years in senior leadership roles.
- Skills: Expertise in AI, robotics, sensor fusion, motion control, and real-time processing. Proficiency in Python, C++, ROS, machine learning frameworks, and robotics simulation tools. Strong experience with control systems, embedded systems, and cloud robotics.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project management skills, Agile methodology experience, and familiarity with MLOps and DevOps practices.
- Knowledge of industrial compliance and manufacturing standards.
- Contributions to open-source robotics or AI projects.
