Role Definition:
Serve as an experienced individual contributor on projects and assignments that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability with focus on weld engineering.


Responsibilities:


  • Contribute to teams involved in weld engineering initiatives.
  • Provide regional welding engineering guidance/support.
  • Provide welding inspection support and train weld quality teams.
  • Lead or contribute to welding research projects.
  • Lead or contribute to welding/material failure analysis and cause analysis report
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary technical teams to provide superior welding process solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Caterpillar welding community to develop and implement welding processes.
  • Mentor junior welding engineers
  • Keep up to date on new technologies in the areas of joining.
  • Communicate welding process improvements to the Caterpillar welding community.
  • Participate in assessment of factory/supplier weld quality adherence.
  • Travelling to supplier and Caterpillar facilities nationally and internationally to support weld inspection activities and weld engineering initiatives.
  • Requires an appropriate technical or university degree in weld engineering / Production engineering / Material science / Mechanical engineering combined with a minimum of 8 year of appropriate welding experience / a minimum of 11 years as a Manufacturing Technician, or appropriate equivalent external experience.

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of welding technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.


Level Basic Understanding:


  • Hands on experience in GMAW/FCAW, with the ability to produce high quality welds in plate positions.
  • Certified Welding Inspector.
  • Experience/Certification with non-destructive weld inspection methods.
  • Knowledge of weld cross sectional examination techniques.
  • Working knowledge of welding specifications & standards (AWS, ISO/EN, etc.).
  • Experience in Welding Engineering or Heavy Steel Fabrication.
  • Experience with reading prints and GD&T.
  • Top Candidates will also have:
  • Experience with welding failure analysis.
  • Experience with structural weld repair.
  • Experience with fabrication planning.
  • Fundamental understanding of structural weld fatigue.
  • Working knowledge of Caterpillar Production Systems.

Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Knowledge of organizational standards, procedures, and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.
Level Basic Understanding:


  • Discusses the relevance of standards for a manufacturing environment.
  • Researches process and product blueprints for own area.
  • Describes and follows all policies, standards and procedures.
  • Obtains documentation and information on standards and their usage.

Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviours.
Level Basic Understanding:


  • Describes non-verbal behaviours that influence the interpretation of the message.
  • Cites examples of effective and ineffective communications.
  • Explains the importance of effective business communication.
  • Speaks/writes using correct language, mechanics, and gestures.
  • Communicates technical information effectively with team members and others in the Caterpillar welding community.
  • Network and establish collaborative relationships within Caterpillar.
