Post/Job Title Research Officer, UNICEF
Job Purpose As a Research Officer, you will play a crucial role in conducting research, analyzing data, and developing comprehensive O&M guidelines to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of rural water supply systems implemented under the Jal Jeevan Mission. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts, government stakeholders, and partner organizations to gather insights, identify best practices, and develop practical recommendations for improving O&M practices.

Reporting to  Jal Jeevan Mission Chair Professor - A Research Officer at IIM-B will work under the guidance of Professor Chair in helping states towards the review of existing O&M framework/policy/guidelines and development of state-specific O&M guidelines along with its enactment and operationalization through capacity building of stakeholders in selected states.

Principal Accountabilities & Responsibilities 

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following: 


  • Conduct research and literature reviews on O&M practices, policies, and innovations related to rural water supply systems.
  • Collect and analyze data from field studies, discussions with stakeholders, and relevant sources to assess the current O&M practices at State level. 
  • Coordinate with government agencies (State Public Health Department/Rural Water Supply Department, other allied departments) and other stakeholders to understand their perspectives, challenges, and needs regarding O&M of rural water supply schemes. 
  • Develop and refine O&M guidelines and protocols tailored to the context of the Jal Jeevan Mission, considering factors such as water quality, performance monitoring, operational and financial model, community participation, capacity building and sustainability. 
  • Support states in pilot test and validation of O&M guidelines in selected areas and iterate based on feedback and lessons learned. 
  • Provide technical assistance, training, and capacity building support to government officials, field staff, and community members on implementation of O&M guidelines effectively. 
  • Document best practices, case studies, and success stories to disseminate knowledge and promote learning across stakeholders. 

Qualification and Personal Profile Master’s degree in civil engineering/Rural Development/Social Work/Public Health, or related field
Other Skill and Ability Requirements
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in research, project management, or technical advisory roles related to water supply, sanitation, or rural development. 
  • Strong understanding of Operation and Maintenance Principles, methodologies, and challenges in the context of rural water supply systems. 
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, facilitate workshops, and present findings in a clear and compelling manner. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. 
  • Prior experience working with research organization, government agencies, NGOs, or international development agencies is desirable. 
  • Fluency in English with working command over Hindi is preferred.
