Main Job Purpose:


The Supervisor ensures that standard procedures are enforced uniformly across the factory, whilst making judgements about the effectiveness and quality of production that is in progress.  She/he will ensure the In and Out logistic operation is efficiently managed; material available to the line at the right time in the right quantity, with product ready to be efficiently evacuated via trailers or other means.  The Supervisor will manage the operational priorities set by the Factory Manager whilst supervising overall Quality and directing engineering priorities according to the daily plan. 


The Supervisor will coach Chargehands in general management processes, whilst liaising with them to ensure shift rotas are efficient across the factory and that any safety, quality, personnel issues (including disciplinary) are managed without impact to Key Performance Indicators.


Key Skills and Responsibilities:


  • UMS– Intimately understands the UMS philosophy, which demands targeted investment in productivity improvement, whilst ruthlessly targeting waste and expense in order to drive growth in factory performance.  Possesses a critical mind able to innovate efficient processes and embrace new technologies in a timely manner to drive Competitive Advantage.


  • Technical – Supervisors are required to maintain a Working Knowledge of the technical skills required to Operate, Maintain, Improve and Repair (OMIR) equipment.  This will assist their responsibilities as facilitators and coaches, and when setting targets across the Sourcing Unit


    • Understand the principles of mechanism and motion and be able to conduct changeovers, basic repairs and adjustments (eg Cams, slides, bearings, belts and pulleys).  Utilise appropriate lubrication regimes.


    • Understanding of principles and application of pneumatics in the sourcing unit; able to conduct fault finding and basic repair.


    • Conduct basic electrical tasks within the Sourcing Unit (eg Lock Out/Tag Out, Isolation Procedures, Fault Location on a Common Control System and Testing and Verification of Common Proximity Sensors.


  • Safety - Utilise appropriate safety and environmental procedures for people, processes, materials, products and equipment to ensure a safe working environment for the whole team.


  • Environment – Reduce costs due to waste and minimise impact to health, safety and the environment through working to eliminate waste and through the correct management of waste and hazardous materials.


  • Quality - Ensure that all aspects of Quality within the Sourcing Unit are in accordance with agreed Quality procedures to protect and promote the brand and product.


  • Leadership - Promote the development of a highly effective team through strong communication, leading by example whilst keeping focused on goals and targets.


  • Administration - Able to administer the Sourcing Unit in a timely and accurate manner regarding shift rosters, pay, performance, training and safety whilst liaising with Line Leaders and Sourcing Unit leads to ensure policy compliance.  Additionally provide support and advice to Line Leaders on issues of discipline and conflict resolution.


  • Continuous Improvement - Use performance measures to identify and prioritise losses in production area.  Apply rigorous Cost Deployment and the Zero loss concept to eliminate losses.  Lead Focused Improvement activities to ensure Key Performance Indicators are met.


  • Problem Solving - Has the ability to identify, prioritise and address problems using appropriate tools and techniques that eliminate recurrence.


  • Digital- Has the ability to adapt and support/anchor the digital initiatives in the factory


  • Production Output – Support the setting of Sourcing Unit production plan targets and review performance in order to drive functional goals across the Sourcing Unit.


  • Business Awareness - Understanding of the need to meet changing demands and the role of marketing and product innovation in growing the business and increasing the company's share.


Other Requirements:


  • May be required by the Factory Director to champion one or more performance areas within the Sourcing Unit eg Diversity, Eradicating Waste and Quality Protection.


Professional Qualifications:


  • National level qualification at B-tech grade in mechanical or electrical engineering.


  • Requires national School leaver qualifications in:


    • Reading and Comprehension


    • Writing


    •  Mathematics. 


Required to support report writing, data analysis, problem solving, mechanical calculations, leadership and coaching skills.


Experience Required:


ESSENTIAL:


  • Core Engineering Skills – Background in Maintenance (mechanical or electrical) with minimum of 3 years experience required.


  • Significant manufacturing experience that provides the necessary technical and leadership experience to operate effectively in a World Class Manufacturing site; able build and motivate a large team, as well as coach it to success.


PREFERRED / DESIRABLE:


  • Experience of manufacturing in a Fast-Moving Consumer Goods Company.


  • Experience as a team member within a project Management team with an awareness of project management tools and techniques.
