Context:
GSK is one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, and we are on a mission to improve humanity’s quality of life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
You will be part of GSK’s ambitious program to transform its commercial manufacturing and supply chain organization helping to increase capacity and speed for transferring new products from our R&D organization. Data and AI are an essential part in achieving this goal, which ultimately will help launch medicines quicker and have a positive impact on patients.
This role is responsible for maintaining and expanding the knowledge representations at GSK within the CMC NPI business area. Specifically, you will use ontologies, taxonomies, and other semantic foundational components to enhance data interoperability, metadata management, artificial intelligence applications, and more! The day-to-day will vary; some days you may be meeting with domain experts to develop competency questions, while other days you will be adding coverage to CMC NPI central ontology. Your work will touch a multitude of domains across CMC NPI, covering many departments.
Job Purpose:
The CMC Data Backbone and Knowledge System serves as key components to deliver high quality reusable data products as well as digitally encoded organizational knowledge to the CMC business area which links the R&D and the supply chain organizations. As a fundamental part of the analytics ecosystem, the CMC Data Backbone and Knowledge System must both provide a trustworthy repository for data used across the organizations, alongside the tools and workflows that make it easier for business teams to use this data for decision making purposes.
The primary purpose of this job is to develop, manage, and promote the use of ontologies and taxonomies within the CMC space to enable data interoperability and ensure that semantic data models align with business processes, from simple reference lists to complex ontologies within the CMC Space, and to serve them up in a FAIR and trustworthy manner, to the CMC organization (whole of GSK).
The success of the Principal Product Designer (Principal Ontologist) role is defined by their ability to translate work closely with stakeholders and translate diverse user requirements into actionable tech enhancements. The platform under their responsibility needs to be appropriately validated, compliant, and always ready for inspection. The Person must also maintain effective operational oversight, vendor management, stakeholder engagement, and customer support within the ontology and data modelling space. Additionally, they must successfully support and input to system strategy, ensure data quality is being enforced adequately, and provide necessary project support, demonstrating effectiveness and accountability across the entire project stack. The Person will understand the value of FAIR semantics and help design the CMC Data Backbone and Knowledge System to support analytical workflows.
Why is this job critical?
This role will actively support and drive the CMC Knowledge system team. The Principal Product Designer (Principal Ontologist) will work with the Product Owner to drive FAIR semantics and create an interoperable, platform and suite of tools to enable both human and machine-actionable selfservice interactions with terminologies across GSK R&D and GSC in the CMC space.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Focus: Keep abreast of emerging trends and advancements in ontology engineering, knowledge representation and semantic technologies to support system strategy from in terms of a high-level view of whether to maintain, enhance, or divest the system.
Product Design: Drive design and development of the product to meet varied stakeholder requirements, leading the development and implementation of the CMC ontology to represent the domain promoting FAIR principles and building bridges from legacy products to emerging solutions.
Semantic coherency: Recognize patterns across disparate workstreams, make abstractions, using a combination of approaches (top-down, bottom-up, etc.). Drive FAIR interoperability through the harmonization of entities and derive their context through the addition of metadata and place them into context with other entities
Operational Oversight: Working with the Product Owner, ensure day-to-day system operations are in place including governance and oversight, risk management, alignment to other systems and processes, maintenance of process maps, user documentation, training, and communications. Ensure ontology governance by managing versioning, updates, and aligining with FAIR principles. Guide the team to ensure semantic models are consistent and maintained across projects, guide fellow ontologists' work to align with accepted practices, standards, objectives, key results, and strategic initiatives.
Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain stakeholder listing for issue escalation, general communication, and project participation. Maintain an engagement plan for regular education, business process improvements, customer forums, and data quality exercises.

At least 3 years designing and managing taxonomies, thesauri and/or ontologies
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Knowledge Management, Library Science, Data Science or related field.
In-depth knowledge of semantic technologies, ontologies, and reference data, with practical experience in applying these concepts to product design:
An understanding of data modeling principles, including dimensional modeling, entity relationship tools (ER tools), and semantic modeling.
Expertise in FAIR Data Principles, the Semantic Web technology stack (SCHACL, RDF, RDF*, OWL, etc.), and experience using ontology development tools .
Proficiency with both relational and NoSQL databases, and a good understanding of the differences between them.
Ability to interpret existing semantic schemas and help to develop and deliver the design and implementation of solutions architectures and governance plans.
Desirable skills & experience:
Data governance
Experience implementing knowledge Graphs
Workflow design
Documentation of compliant products and procedures
