Functional Description:
American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) is the leading payment card issuer for businesses in the United States and various international markets and supports business owners and companies with products and services to help them run and grow their businesses. Control Management at American Express is a comprehensive and integrated program designed to identify, measure, report, monitor and control operational risk exposures of various business processes. It supports business units in meeting all relevant operational risk, regulatory and compliance requirements.
GCS Control Management team aims to ensure that GCS has a robust first line of defense, playing an active role in supporting the growth of business, meet its objectives and demonstrating an effective control framework.
The objective of the GCS Control Management Specialized Operational Risk (OR) team is to provide subject matter expertise on specific Operational Risk topics to ensure the BU is equipped with in-depth knowledge of risk-stripes to manage and mitigate these risks effectively; supports the BU with expert guidance for topical Operational Risk intelligence.
GCS is looking for a Manager of Specialized OR focused on ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization. It will involve extensive collaboration with multiple partners across numerous business units, functional areas, and geographies.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for end-to-end management of GCS (Global Commercial Services) Business Continuity Plans and Business Impact Analysis in line with AEMP 05
- Support in revamping the BC Plan Structure for the BU. Define strategy and implement functional plans
- Ongoing refresh of BC Plans, Exercises and timely closure of open gaps/ areas of opportunities.
- Lead the annual BIA certification exercise in coordination with SMEs and BIA owners. Ensure completeness (Third-Party; Applications) and accuracy of inputs (Brand, Reputational, Financial and Compliance impact) that drive BIA tier
- Ensure GCS is aligned with all Regulatory requirements/ changes, Enterprise initiatives and leverage Industry best practices.
- Collaborate effectively with GCS senior leaders/ BIA owners/ Control Management Community of Practice leaders to ensure Business has appropriate insight into the BIA tiers and BCP mitigation strategies
- Partner closely with Enterprise Resilience team on upcoming program changes and GCS scorecards/ monthly reporting
- Support 2nd line, Internal Audit and Regulatory exams related to Resilience as BU SPOC
- Support subject matter expects in sharing of knowledge/guidance and participate in conversations with BU on associated topics
- Conduct initial review of planned guidance for BUs to ensure alignment with standards set by centralized specialist risk-strip teams
- Support integration of decentralized risk types into broader Operational Risk Management (ORM) policies and programs
- Compile and review topical risk information, including emerging trends, best practices, and regulatory updates relevant to each area of expertise, and support the day-to-day activities required to maintain the repository of topical risk information
- Compile materials to support design and assist in dissemination of targeted training and awareness programs to increase understanding and management of specific risk topics within GCS
- Support more senior team members in consultation on the design and implementation of controls tailored to specialized risk areas
- Support more senior team members in compiling and reviewing topical risk knowledge to share with BU process owners to enable BU to strengthen and embed relevant ORM considerations into processes
- Support gathering topical risk strategies and procedures to align with changes in the business environment and regulatory landscape
- Support sharing insights, better practices, themes, etc. across the enterprise.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function) and understanding critical operational risk management lifecycle activities
- Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Experience in process governance, establishing and leading all aspects of robust decision-making processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
- Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios optimally
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous
- Certification in Business Continuity Planning, Disaster Recovery will be preferred
- Experience in financial services industry
- Experience in at least one of the following:

- Supporting go-to subject matter experts in sharing subject matter expertise within the BU on decentralized risks
- Facilitating activities to align with enterprise policies and programs pertaining to specific risk types
- Support advising on decentralized risk types into broader operational risk policies and programs
