Allegion is seeking a relationship-oriented individual for the Component Engineering (CE) Lead position within our Hardware Engineering Team, with additional responsibilities as a People Lead. This role is hardware-centric, focusing on critical semiconductor, interconnection, and passive component spaces.


The CE Lead is instrumental in establishing alternative component strategies, developing technical relationships, and expanding Allegion’s technical capabilities. Additionally, as a People Lead, this position involves mentoring and guiding team members, fostering a collaborative work environment, and driving team performance.


This role works particularly closely with Supply Chain, Hardware / Mechanical / Firmware Engineering functions, Suppliers, Electronic Contract Manufacturers, Factory, and Quality.


Technical Responsibilities:


  • Oversee the CE scope covering semiconductor devices (ICs, diodes, transistors, MOSFETs, etc.), interconnection systems, and passive components.
  • Support alternate identification for incoming part requests, end-of-life notices, shortages, and any other component alerts like PCN/PDN.
  • Support the Hardware Engineering team by conducting BOM Health Analysis and identifying early risks related to multisource options, compliance status, and other potential issues.
  • Maintain and enforce the component selection process.
  • Maintain the component library with approved alternates, including the creation of component footprints and schematic symbols.
  • Recommend components, mentor project teams in their application, and approve the use of selected parts by Engineering.
  • Partner with Sourcing to vet and approve component suppliers.
  • Develop technical relationships with component suppliers and serve as the key technical interface between Suppliers, Contract Manufacturers and Engineering.
  • Collaborate with Sourcing and Engineering to develop alternate component strategies and scalability needs.
  • Understand the quality and capacity expansion plans of component suppliers.
  • Educate the organization on industry trends that should influence hardware decisions.
  • Establish component derating guidelines and other related best practices.

Managerial Responsibilities:


  • Lead a team of component engineers.
  • Create an environment that builds employee engagement and fosters employee growth and development.
  • Set individual and team goals in alignment with organizational goals and monitor progress through regular performance feedback sessions.
  • Act as a lead to resolve issues within the team and help coordinate the resolution of issues with external parties.
  • Work with the organization to provide the tools and resources to enable team members to be successful in execution.
  • Drive collaboration across individuals, teams, and groups.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with electronic component parts and library management.
  • Proven people management skills.
  • Experience working with global teams in a matrix organization structure.
  • Experience working with Silicon Expert, or similar tools, to identify alternate sources and manage component lifecycles.
  • Hands-on experience with BOM scrubbing, alternate sourcing for electronic components, supplier strategies, identification of critical component parameters, and collaboration with Hardware Engineering, Global Supplier Management, PCBA Manufacturers, and Product Lifecycle teams.
  • Strong knowledge of component critical characteristics, applications, and understanding of datasheets.
  • Experience creating electronic components, footprints, and symbols per IPC and Corporate standards.
  • Experience handling component regulatory compliance, including RoHS, REACH, TSCA, PROP 65, etc.
  • Direct experience with component lifecycles, including obsolescence, lead-time management, and part change notices (PCNs).
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer or other ECAD tools.
  • Self-starter with the ability to make critical recommendations and decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently to meet strict and aggressive deadlines.
  • High degree of focus and attention to detail.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems effectively.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of global Environmental Compliance Directives, including EU RoHS.
  • Experience working with various PCBA manufacturers and resolving component-related issues as they arise.
  • Understanding of semiconductor manufacturing and packaging requirements, including Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL).
  • Expertise in the qualification of electronic hardware, parts selection, manufacturing support, and failure analysis.
  • Understanding of PCBA manufacturing processes and environments.
  • Knowledge of IPC PCB design guidelines.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for test (DFT).
  • Familiarity with the use of a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
