Introduction to role

The Scientific Computing Platform (SCP) is a foundational capability for HPC and scaled computing solutions. Embedded within the Research D&A organization, it is central to analytics products focused on computational chemistry, imaging, multi-OMICs, structural biology, data science, and AI. The SCP team is accountable for the end-to-end delivery of high-performance analytics products, with an emphasis on the HPC experience. We combine modern HPC with a powerful DevOps stack and cloud-native technologies to power research and development at AstraZeneca.


Accountabilities

We are seeking a passionate Technical Lead for Operations and Support to join our distributed team. The successful candidate will have oversight of all first- and second-line support activities for scientific computing services including HPC job scheduling, scientific applications, and web-based analytics portals. You will represent the platform to our scientists, seek to understand user experience and changing requirements, and ensure that the platform is constantly adapting and improving. This crucial role has responsibility for daily operations, from physical assets through to the private cloud platform and user-facing applications and services. You will own the service desk and operations team remit and prioritization, and participate in regular coordination with SCP Tech Leads representing other areas of the platform and product offerings.


What you'll do:


  • Oversee the platform's daily IT Service Management processes, operations, and user support


  • Lead and drive the team in good IT service management practices


  • Ownership of operational processes across the platform, including Incident Management, Problem Management, and Change Management


  • Continually improve the overall user experience, considering ease of use, availability of computing resources, and quality of technical support


  • Continually optimize, define, and document operational procedures, drawing from established frameworks such as Site Reliability Engineering, Lean, and ITIL


  • Responsibility for enterprise service management in ServiceNow


  • Lead change processes including testing, preparation, and multi-channel communication to users and partners


  • Establish and monitor operational metrics representing platform health and set Service Level Objectives to define delivery expectations


  • Shape the development of operational dashboards, telemetry, and alerting


Essential Skills/Experience


  • Extensive experience as a leader and individual contributor in enterprise IT services operational and support roles


  • ITIL certification


  • Evidence of pragmatic application of ITIL in a dynamic research computing environment


  • Knowledge of scalable computing architectures, and scientific application management in a high-performance computing environment


  • Experience in managing IT infrastructure including assets, vendor support contracts, and license management


  • Solid foundation in DevOps processes, configuration management, and agile methodologies


  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement approach


  • Ability to create high-quality communications or documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences


  • Demonstrable experience in incident response, problem resolution, and root cause analyses to prevent a recurrence


  • Experience in auditing, utilization analysis, and report generation for IT services and shared systems


  • Strong drive for automation and the creation of self-service offerings


Desirable Skills/Experience
  • Site Reliability Engineering


  • Experience in healthcare or pharmaceutical domains


  • Expertise with the Linux operating system as a user or administrator
