Job Description


You will be responsible for building and developing AZ India’s Strategy function and Business Development & Alliance Functions. As a leader managing the strategy function, you will be responsible for New Product launch excellence, business transformation projects, and market research. In your role as a BD & Alliance leader you will be responsible to identify right partnership opportunities, building internal consensus on value of the partnership, scouting for right partners, due diligence, deal valuation, negotiation and deal closure and alliance management.


This is a high visibility position with mission critical deliverables.


The location of this position is in Bangalore, India.


Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Strategy
  • Collaborate across all levels within various functions spanning business units, operations, Finance, Legal Compliance and Global functions to be able to implement activities related to commercial strategy, pricing strategies and digital initiatives
  • Support development of short-and long-term strategic plans for business units
  • Manage and streamline launch excellence processes for new products / indications
  • Provide market insights and competitive intelligence in aiding strategy decisions and Business development
  • Partner with digital service providers and offer novel solutions to business problem statements
  • Support on marketing excellence , enhancing digital capabilities
  • Build forecasting models to support in-market cases / new product launch viability
  • Lead the development of the AZ India 2030 ambition and strategy. Project Management of the execution of the identified priorities.
  • Business Development
  • Identify right partnership opportunities – inbound and outbound – in line with AZ strategic priorities
  • Prepare deal business case and get internal approvals for running/participating in a deal mandate
  • Scout for right partners who can deliver desired commercial outcomes while upholding AZ values and ethics
  • Lead deal negotiation, due diligence, final business case preparation and secure internal and external approvals
  • Ensure deal closure on time and smooth transition to alliance management phase
  • Work closely with region and global BD teams on specific projects/mandates as needed
  • Build, expand and maintain a reliable network with counterparts in other MNCs and leading India companies
  • Alliance Management
  • Full ownership of partner business – development and delivery of partner business estimates and budgets
  • Act as single point of contact for partners in India
  • Problem-solve issues with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth functioning of the alliance
  • Hold regular alliance meetings and evaluate partner performance against contractual commitments
  • Manage partnerships in full compliance of AZ Internal Guidelines, India regulations and terms of agreement
  • Role Model – AZ values
  • Constantly make efforts to understand the latest science in therapeutic areas of interest
  • Uphold AZ code of ethics and ensure full compliance by partners
  • Build a robust compliance mechanism for running alliances in close collaboration with other stakeholders
  • Be entrepreneurial in thinking and build partnerships to win in the therapeutic areas of interest

Essential Requirements


  • MBA from a premier B-school
  • 10-12 years of experience post MBA
  • Must have experience in Business Development,  or Investment Banking or Alliance management
  • Experience in project planning and management in a cross functional team setting
  • Strong business acumen, negotiation and financial modelling skills and creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to collaborate and deal with ambiguity

Desirable Requirements


  • Experience in Business Development in Pharma industry
  • Strong connects to support the Business Development efforts

Reporting Relationships


  • Reporting to Director Commercial Excellence, BD & Strategy
  • It’s a team management Functional head role, with Strategy, BD & Alliances teams reporting into this position
