Static Doubler Repair Project:


The intern will explore and understand the existing stiffened panel methodology for Fuselage. Understand the different loading types, analyze the existing doubler repair methodology and create an envelope criteria for doubler repairs from a static point of view for different sizes of doubler and different types of fasteners (Al, Ti). After Analysis, a report needs to be drafted for the envelope coverage for acceptability of doubler repairs from static point of view.


Fatigue (ADL for rework + Dent)


Explore and understand the existing methods of analyzing dent and rework from the F & DT point of view. Utilize the existing methods for fatigue life calculation.Extrapolate/ back-calculate allowable rework and dent depths for a given fatigue stress, nominal thickness and type of area (riveted or unriveted) for a given fatigue life. Create an envelope report for allowable damage and integrate the same into the FAS tool for quick decision making.


Fatigue test results Kt exploration:


Explore and analyze test results for stress concentration and compare with existing derivation methods of Kt. Propose adaptation of test results for Kt calculation for repair scenarios for less conservative and more realistic life calculation for aircrafts post repair.


Automatic Area and Secondary moment calculations:


Develop a simple tool where users can easily enter/draw different cross-sections and calculate area and second moments of area quickly based on point coordinates. The key aspect is to be able to adapt different cross-sections for reworked dimensions. Before developing, explore existing ways of calculation across Airframe in-service departments and re-use wherever possible. 


Other Requirements:


The intern will be expected to liaise with skill leaders/ principals/managers in order to ensure that methods, assumptions, data and procedures reflect on-going developments. Additionally the intern is expected to support on-going local improvement initiatives to increase team efficiency through any means possible but with emphasis on methods and process improvements.
