Role Overview: Informatics Scientific Application Developer
As an Informatics Scientific Application Developer within Lilly’s Research Informatics team, you will develop, enhance, and support critical scientific applications that empower researchers in biology, chemistry, and translational sciences. Your work will directly contribute to accelerating drug discovery and development by building user-friendly, high-performance solutions that manage experimental data and streamline laboratory workflows.
You will collaborate closely with scientists, data engineers, and IT specialists to design and implement informatics solutions that meet complex scientific needs, ensuring seamless data capture, visualization, and analysis for experimental and laboratory data.
Key Responsibilities & Objectives
Design, build, and maintain scientific informatics applications to support research workflows in areas such as compound management, assay data capture, bioinformatics, and laboratory automation.
Develop intuitive user interfaces and robust backend services, integrating scientific instruments, data lakes, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Collaborate with scientists and informatics teams to understand experimental workflows and translate requirements into technical solutions.
Work with SQL, Oracle, or NoSQL databases to manage complex scientific data structures.
Ensure high-performance computing (HPC) solutions for large data processing pipelines, ensuring optimal performance and scalability.
Proactively troubleshoot, debug, and optimize applications for high availability and performance in a lab environment.
Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, and pair programming sessions to maintain code quality and knowledge sharing.
Support cloud-based scientific solutions on platforms such as AWS, Azure, or hybrid cloud environments.
Document solutions clearly and maintain compliance with IT and scientific data governance standards.
Basic Requirements & Experience Expectations
5+ years of experience developing scientific or research-focused applications in the life sciences domain.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
Proficient in at least one scientific programming language (Python preferred), with experience in libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, or RDKit.
Solid experience with web technologies, including JavaScript frameworks like React.js (preferred), Angular, or Node.js.
Experience integrating and automating scientific laboratory systems (e.g., LIMS, ELN, CDS).
Strong knowledge of REST APIs for data retrieval, integration, and automation of scientific workflows.
Experience with containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), and cloud services.
Familiarity with microservices architecture and service-oriented frameworks.
Hands-on experience with unit testing frameworks and version control tools (Git).
Understanding of scientific data lifecycle management and regulatory/compliance considerations in research IT.
Preferred Skills & Experiences
Experience developing applications for scientific data analysis, visualization, or laboratory automation.
Familiarity with assay data management, compound registration systems, and experimental data pipelines.
Hands-on experience with AWS services (S3, Lambda, EC2) for scientific computing workloads.
Strong understanding of biology or chemistry laboratory environments and workflows.
Ability to work across geographically distributed teams and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-management skills.
Exposure to scientific visualization tools and frameworks (e.g., Spotfire, Tableau, Dash).
Experience working in fast-paced, cross-disciplinary research environments.
