Head of Operations (RC-IN SE GS-SV)


Why The Role Exists


  • This is a crucial Senior Management Role within GS-SV and forms the part of think-tank group to formulate and drive business growth strategies taking cognizance of organizational strength as well as market potential including competition landscape.
  • This role has two facets ~ one towards factory operations and the other towards field service operations to enhance customer satisfaction index (CSI) by outperforming on all Key Result Areas (KRA).
  • In the first facet, this role performs the pivotal role taking care of all day-to-day activities of GS SV factory operations within Vadodara and Bangalore works. While Vadodara operations take care of repair activity of major rotating equipment including but not limited to large steam turbines, turbo-compressors and alternators / generators, Bangalore operations take care of similar jobs for small gas turbines for industrial applications. Both operation centers also serve the after-market business opportunities through collaboration with other network factories across the globe.
  • In the second facet, this role takes care of all the field service team members and ensures they play vital roles in improving the Turnaround Time (TAT) to customer requests.
  • This is a people leadership role with colleagues in Factory Operations, Field Service, After-Market Order Management, and Quality Assurance teams.

Main Purpose of Job


  • Ensure 100% EHS compliance for operations within factory and at project sites.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as walk-the-talk of leadership quality.
  • Formulation of business growth strategy, minutely chalking out execution plan and ensuring timely on-ground implementation to achieve targeted financial results covering KPIs related to On-Time Delivery (OTD), Sales Turn-Over (TO), Book-to-Bill (B2B), Free Cash Flows (FCF), Non-Conformance Costs (NCC), Return on Investment (ROI) among others.
  • Prepare blueprint of future-ready factory operations and implement initiatives in various areas using state-of-the-art technologies, reverse engineering, and design to cost principles. Ensure extensive use of digitalization in association with just-in-time (JIT) techniques in day-to-day operations for better inventory management, improved use of shelf-space in stores, reduce downtime / idle time of machines and ensure better recovery of installed machines / factory resources. Emphasis on collecting data at source (primary data) and process them in an automated way to pave way for transparent and well-informed decision-making process using a central dashboard for all relevant KPIs for both the factory operations. Enhance virtually guided tour for factory for decentralized operations as well as to make efficient use of AR / VR to impart training in a cost-effective manner to new joinees.
  • Annual budget planning for CAPEX / OPEX as well as upskilling human resources and follow-up on the expected results, e.g. ROI for CAPEX / OPEX and productivity improvement for upskilling.
  • Data capturing to identify areas of improvement within factory operations and carry out small yet high-value delivering projects to set global benchmarks on lean and efficient operations.
  • Establish to be an Extended Arm of Sales and First Point of Contact for customers in case of any requirements of technical support. Work closely with BID / Sales team during offer preparation to ensure shortest delivery timelines and best-in-class service delivery during execution.
  • Deliver breakthrough solutions in record time, develop leadership pipeline and expert talent pool to emerge as Center of Competence catering to repair jobs for Siemens and other OEM fleets.
  • Networking and collaboration with the Sales team for factory load planning and monitoring.
  • Networking and collaboration with the Project Management team for effective resource utilization of field service personnel.

 Scope Of Job


  • Strategic:
    • Lead factory operations with 100% EHS compliance and contribute as a significant member of the RC-IN GS-SV Management Team to development of strategic plans, identifying new business models / adapting existing ones to market dynamics to improve share of wallet in already addressed markets and formulate innovative strategies to enter unaddressed markets without jeopardizing anticipated financial outcomes.
    • Participate in monthly business process reviews with country leadership team.
  • Operational Excellence:
    • Devise effective and efficient methods of factory governance and field service operations, plan and conduct periodic performance reviews with various functional leads to gauge progress on KPIs, find variances to identify action plans and follow-up on actions to meet the overall performance targets.
    • Ensure that the business strategy is translated and cascaded down with implementation throughout the functional areas.
    • Periodic reviews of existing business processes as well as outcome of MIS audits to improve them.
  • Engineering and Innovation:
    • Strive excellence in the manufacturing processes to benchmark them against best in the world to emerge as Center of Excellence (COE) in large steam turbine manufacturing as well as repairing of all rotating machineries.
    • Guide and mentor colleagues from factory operations to do routine jobs more efficiently by introducing innovative methods, using state-of-the-art engineering techniques, and embracing new developments.
    • Access the market dynamics from time to time and upskill team members not only to protect existing business (OEM / other OEM fleet) but also grow it beyond-the-core by catering to new business opportunities emerging from upcoming trends in energy markets such as energy efficiency, energy transition, and RE-RTC.
    • Expand after market business opportunities by shortening time to market through reverse engineering and innovation.
  • Network Building and Collaboration:
    • Connect and build rapport with network factories for gas turbines as well as other Center of Excellence (COE) locations supporting project specific engineering deliverables and/or supplies / after-market business opportunities.
    • Establish healthy connect with PM / Sales team within Asia Pacific region and collaborate with them frequently to timely support service requests within the region.
    • Ensure cross utilization of field service team members by regularly updating skills and certifications and reaching out to peers in other regions such as MENA, EU, Americas.
  • Customer Relationship Management:
    • Emerge as the First and Preferred Point of Contact for customers by advocating customer’s expectations within organization.
    • Support sales team to enhance customer engagement and experience.
  • Localization and Vendor Management:
    • Devise roadmap of shop-in-shop approach for highly skillful and niche jobs which are critical-to-business.
    • Develop, nurture and elevate vendor manufacturing ecosystem to promote localization of components which are critical to honor overall delivery commitments.
  • People Leadership and Team Management:
    • Develop culture of safety fostering transparency and focusing continuous improvement.
    • Lead, mentor, and manage team of skilled technicians, and engineers. Develop and implement training programs to enhance their competencies.
    • Annual appraisals for team members.
    • Emerge as the people’s leader of choice!

What You Bring


  • Impeccable integrity, strong work ethics, professional conduct, cultural sensitivity, clear communication in additional to functional skills are essential features of overall candidature.
  • Bachelor's degree (Mechanical / Production / Industrial Engineering) with at least 25 years of experience in repairs of rotating equipments out of which at least 10 years in a senior management role with people manager responsibility.
  • Strong business acumen and in-depth knowledge of financial management including working knowledge of SAP is mandatory. MBA (Operations / Finance) as an additional qualification would be preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience of negotiation skills and customer relationship management during high pressure situations.
  • Effective risk management exhibited during real life case studies.
  • No hesitation to frequent and short / long travel within and outside country for business requirements.
