Job Description

The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Controller is a senior level position responsible for the generation, analysis and submission of ESG reports in coordination with the wider Finance team. The overall objective of this role is to lead the strategy, implementation and maintenance of core solutions required to support the wider teams responsibilities related to regulatory and voluntary ESG Disclosures.


Citi's ESG Controller function, is a relatively new function, established to design and implement disclosure controls and procedures and provide oversight on ESG disclosures for Citi’s regulatory ESG reporting like CSRD, California Climate Disclosure rules, among others; as well as information in Citi’s publicly available ESG reports following commonly followed global disclosure frameworks like Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, relevant sector standards from the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This role reports to Citi's ESG Controller and will be a critical contributor to the design and implementation of the ESG Reporting Strategic solutions, as mentioned above. The wider ESG Controller function’s responsibilities are global in scope and requires working closely with other partner functions like Sustainability & ESG office, Risk, first-line business units, and other functions and disciplines across the organization to ensure timely and accurate reporting of ESG disclosures in a standardized and controlled process.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for defining ESG reporting solution strategies. Bring together critical industry and technology product insights for identification and implementation of core ESG reporting regulations.


  • Lead and represent ESG controllers for technology solution strategies, project planning and project management, implementation and operationalization activities like for example ESG Reporting Applications (Workiva), Emission Accounting Applications (Watershed, IBM, Salesforce, etc.), Customized central ESG Data Infrastructure , etc.


  • Lead third party vendor engagements and relationships for ESG Reporting solutions, for solutions owned by ESG Controllers.


  • Define and own business requirements for ESG report technology solutions, working in collaboration with Technology partners.


  • Lead user acceptance testing for technology solutions owned and used by ESG Controllers.


  • Manage ongoing set-up and maintenance of technology solutions (as “super user”), for supporting the periodic ESG reporting responsibilities of the ESG controllers team.


  • Support regional controller teams to set up Workiva report instances for local ESG reporting, as required.


  • Work with ESG and local Controllers, Sustainability & ESG, Risk and other stakeholders to create and implement automated disclosure controls and procedures for ESG disclosures


  • Ensure data sources used in reporting ESG disclosures are strategic and have appropriate ownership aligned to Citi's data governance model, develop business requirements and partner with technologies to develop reporting solutions


  • Keeping current on evolving disclosure trends in the industry, connecting with peer company network and advising and evaluating impact of emerging regulation


  • Ensure that ESG disclosure requirements (including those expected from the US and international regulators) are properly vetted and implemented in a well-controlled process from an end-to-end perspective


  • Support senior leaders in the Businesses and Finance in their understanding of ESG disclosures and any related implications


Ideal background


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field. Masters and/or CPA preferred.


  • 12+ years of relevant experience, within the financial services industry or Big 4 highly preferred


  • Subject matter expert on ESG disclosures


  • Exposure to ESG Reporting solutions like Workiva, Watershed, IBM, Salesforce, etc.


  • Strong project management skills with experience in driving change at scale in global organizations


  • Demonstrated knowledge of existing ESG regulatory reporting ISSB, SASB, CSRD, CSDDD, EU Taxonomy, etc.


  • Good knowledge and proven exposure to financial services and banking business and services


  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a complex and dynamic environment


  • Good command of spoken and written English


  • Self-motivated with ability to make decisions in absence of detailed instructions


  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
