Director, Customer Risk Management (credit risk management)Overview
We are currently looking for a Director, Asia Pacific Customer Risk Management reporting to the Vice President, Head of Customer Risk Management for Asia Pacific. The role is based in Mumbai or Gurgaon, India.
Mastercard has credit exposure to financial institutions and other counterparties worldwide and managing this exposure is a key part of its evolving and quickly growing business model, The principal responsibility of the role, as the first line of defence, consists in managing Mastercard’s Customer Risk Management (“CRM”) function, primarily for the South Asia and parts of the South East Asia divisions within the Asia Pacific region. Key responsibilities include, without limitation, credit analysis and underwriting of customer exposures, working with divisional management in formulating a risk mitigation approach, and developing risk solutions for new products.
The CRM team operates as a vital component of the broader Strategy & Operations (S&O) group, playing a critical role in supporting and driving the success of Mastercard’s organization.
The magnitude and strategic nature of this exposure necessitates frequent engagement with senior management. The role also involves constant internal and customer engagement, including with the broader S&O group, account and product teams, partnering with the Credit Risk function, the second line of defence, a close working relationship with the Regulatory Affairs team in engaging with central banks and other regulators within the region, working with our Corporate Treasury and Settlement Operations teams to enhance settlement/treasury related processes.

Role
The primary responsibility is to ensure customer risk is appropriately identified, monitored, and managed in accordance with Mastercard’s policies & procedures and risk appetite. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Owning all CRM-related matters for the portfolio under the role’s responsibility;
- Performing customer credit risk analysis, including prudent underwriting of customer exposures, and presenting this to senior management for approval;
- Leading collateral discussions with the account managers and customers. Developing and managing appropriate protection agreements as required;
- Influencing credit standards and CRM policies and procedures
- Demonstrating leadership in delivery of complex cross functional project initiatives and, if appropriate, people management
- Displaying successful relationship building with sales and product organizations and business acumen a Understanding and partnering to design innovative approaches to cater to customers with different business models;
- Partnering with other regional CRM teams to ensure 24x7 global customer risk exposure monitoring, and leading decision process when action needs to be taken to limit exposure;
- Managing through impacts of customer failures including portfolio transfers and license termination;
- Coordinating application process of new customers to ensure onboarding in a timely manner;
- Analyzing and reporting on the portfolio’s exposure and key risks to senior management;
- Working closely with the Regulatory Affairs team, responding to regulatory enquiries as appropriate;
- Conduct portfolio reviews and risk screening via early warning indicators
- Partnering with Corporate Treasury and Settlement Operations teams to enhance settlement/treasury related processes
- Developing risk management solutions for new products, e.g., crypto
All About You
- Undergraduate / Graduate degree in business, finance, accounting or equivalent;
- Experience in credit risk assessment, financial statements analysis and management is a prerequisite; experience in / knowledge of the banking sector and knowledge of the Asian payments regulation landscape are a strong plus;
- Risk mindset: ability to think outside the box and identify potential sources of risk;
- Problem solving: ability to develop innovative solutions to manage/ address credit risk;
- Ability to efficiently lead and coordinate a team remotely as risk managers are located locally with the business;
- Outstanding written and verbal English communication skills;
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills, including at the very senior management levels;
- Advanced Excel and PowerPoint user;
- Crisis management: ability to manage through a crisis under time pressure and make tough decisions with imperfect information;
