The Role: DevOps Evangelist

The Team: The Cloud Engineering Team sits within the Market Intelligence division at S&P Global. The team is made up of a group of technical specialists who provide hands-on support to internal product development teams across the company. Our work helps to drive public cloud architecture and DevOps activities, solve for performance and design impacts, and advocate for sound cloud operation models. Crucially for this role, we enable product development teams by providing reusable blueprints and templates, engaging in internal advocacy, promoting best practices and usage of the blueprints, and run upskilling workshops and bootcamps.

The Impact: As a key member of the Cloud Engineering team, you will help boost the potential of developers and product development teams across the S&P Global Market Intelligence division, setting teams up for success by advocating for the benefits of best DevOps practices. You’ll do this through internal advocacy and by directly engaging with teams, guiding them through modules, blueprints, and company standards.

What’s in it for you:

  • Gain more experience in cloud infrastructure technologies
  • A highly visible role which will help you build a career within a global company
  • An opportunity to learn and build your own technology skills, gaining a deep knowledge of core engineering tools and best practices – and/or to the opportunity to share your existing expertise with those who are just starting on their journey and help them grow
  • A high level of job flexibility in a skilled and friendly team where you’ll get plenty of support

Responsibilities:

  • Stay up to date on the latest cloud infrastructure technologies and their implementation (e.g. Terraform, AWS services). Stay plugged into industry standards and best practices.
  • Stay up to date on blueprints and modules developed by our team and familiarize yourself with how they work, with support and guidance from mentors.
  • Advocate and socialize the need for DevOps best practices, as well as the blueprints and modules we’ve created. Engage with the technology community at S&P Global by participating in and presenting at internal forums, townhalls, and guild meetings.
  • Facilitate virtual group sessions and hands-on technical workshops for colleagues of varying technical abilities, focused mostly on novice to intermediate. Demo core engineering concepts (e.g. Git and Terraform basics) as well as specific technical blueprints developed by our team. Troubleshoot and help participants who’ve run into trouble during sessions.
  • Work with a variety of teammates to lead the creation of in-depth upskilling content. Provide insights to help enhance existing materials.
  • Help with the set-up before workshops by ensuring participants have proper access to AWS environments, security groups, and licenses for specific tools.

What We’re Looking For:

We are not necessarily looking for someone who perfectly fits all requirements in this role! We are looking for someone with great communication skills, and a desire to help others and advocate internally for best practices. Beyond that, we are happy to offer training and support to help you be successful in this role.

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • A strong desire to help others to grow and succeed
  • The ability to collaborate with virtual colleagues globally, and to thrive in a flexible environment
  • The ability to break down complex ideas in a way that a variety of people can understand, and explain concepts in multiple different ways
  • A desire to further your own skills and expertise and to keep learning

Desired – Technical AND/OR Advocacy

  • Basic scripting skills: Bash and Powershell will be helpful
  • Some confidence with Terraform
  • Some confidence with Git
  • Experience delivering interactive virtual workshops
  • Experience with public speaking and advocacy

We are looking for someone with a schedule that allows them to collaborate in real-time with colleagues across multiple time zones. This role will include delivering time-bound half-day workshops to colleagues in west coast USA and APAC, two areas where we have a lot of presence.
