About this role


Position Overview:


BlackRock is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Associate to support its growing and dynamic data modeling function. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining data models that drive critical business insights and operational efficiencies. You will work closely with cross-functional teams—including business stakeholders, data stewards, and engineering teams—to manage the full lifecycle of data product modeling from ideation through delivery. The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years of experience in data modeling, data governance, or data stewardship and will thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.


Key Responsibilities


Business & Strategic Acumen


  • Alignment with Business Goals: Collaborate closely with business units to understand evolving data requirements and ensure that data models support various use cases, including operational efficiencies, risk management, and commercial applications.
  • Defining Success Criteria: Work with stakeholders to set clear objectives for data models, ensuring they are aligned with organizational strategies and deliver measurable business value.

Data Governance & Quality


  • Governance Integration: Apply robust data governance controls to maintain the integrity of data models, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Health Monitoring: Develop and track data quality metrics for key data models, regularly assessing and refining processes to identify deficiencies and potential improvements.

Data Product Modelling Lifecycle Management


  • End-to-End Ownership: Support the full delivery lifecycle of data products, through the planning, design, and release of data models that address critical business needs.
  • Model Development: Contribute to the design and creation of conceptual, logical, and physical data models, ensuring they align with strategic objectives and performance requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with product managers, engineers, data stewards, and stakeholders to integrate models effectively into broader data solutions and platforms.

Requirements Gathering & Documentation


  • Stakeholder Engagement: Gather, define, and document business requirements for data models, translating these needs into detailed technical specifications and user stories for development teams.
  • Clarity & Precision: Break down complex data challenges into manageable tasks, ensuring alignment and clarity between technical deliverables and business objectives.

Data Model Maintenance & Support


  • Issue Resolution: Provide Level 3 support for complex inquiries or issues related to data models, proactively identifying and addressing data modelling gaps or inconsistencies.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the optimization of modeling processes, advocating for industry best practices and new techniques to enhance data quality and operational efficiency.

Collaboration & Communication


  • Technical & Non-Technical Interface: Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams, translating complex data modeling concepts into actionable insights.
  • Agile Delivery: Work in an agile environment, managing multiple tasks and priorities to ensure efficient and timely development and deployment of data models.

Qualifications & Requirements


  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 4 years in data modeling, preferably within a complex or large-scale environment.
  • Experience in the financial services industry is a plus, but not required.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proven proficiency in data modeling (conceptual, logical, physical, ER diagrams, etc) and familiarity with data governance best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as SQL, Python, Unix, etc.
  • Experience with metadata management or data governance platforms for data management and quality assurance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of relational, NoSQL, or graph databases and cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) is beneficial.
  • Business & Communication Skills:
  • Strong business acumen and ability to align data models with data product, organizational, and client needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical concepts to various audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in an agile environment.
  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
